The New England Patriots have won three consecutive games and enter Thursday Night Football with considerable momentum. Unfortunately for New England, Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams might be playing his best football at exactly the wrong time.
Williams was named NFC Offensive Player of the Week following an impressive performance against the Atlanta Falcons.
The former No. 1 overall draft pick completed 30 of 36 passes for 305 yards and a touchdown in Chicago's victory. He finished with a 111.2 passer rating, delivering one of the most efficient performances of his young career.
The recognition came after Williams missed three consecutive games because of a hamstring injury. His return could hardly have been more encouraging for Chicago.
Now he prepares to face Drake Maye and the Patriots in a nationally televised matchup between two teams with identical 4-2 records.
Williams delivers remarkable comeback performance
Williams' performance against Atlanta was notable for several reasons. His 83.3% completion percentage represented a career-best mark, while his 305 passing yards marked his first 300-yard game of the season.

Chicago also demonstrated impressive efficiency near the goal line, scoring on four of its five red-zone opportunities before accounting for a final possession that ended with kneel-downs.
The performance earned Williams his second career NFC Offensive Player of the Week award. He joined Jay Cutler as the only Bears quarterbacks to receive the honor twice. That distinction illustrates the significance of his latest performance.
Williams also became only the second NFL quarterback this season to complete more than 80% of his passes while throwing for at least 300 yards on 35 or more attempts.
Geno Smith accomplished the feat earlier in the season. For Chicago, the performance reinforced the importance of having its starting quarterback healthy again.

Patriots face difficult defensive challenge
New England's defense will enter Thursday's matchup dealing with several injuries. The Patriots have ruled out cornerbacks Carlton Davis III, Karon Prunty and Channing Canada. Safety Kevin Byard III and fellow defensive back Craig Woodson are questionable.
Those absences and uncertainties create an interesting challenge against a quarterback coming off such an efficient performance. New England has allowed just 18.8 points per game through its first six contests, helping the Patriots establish themselves as one of the AFC's more competitive teams.
However, maintaining that defensive production against Chicago could require contributions from several replacement players. Maye has also been impressive recently. The Patriots quarterback threw three touchdown passes in Sunday's 26-19 victory over the New York Jets, extending New England's winning streak to three games.
Thursday presents an opportunity for both young quarterbacks to demonstrate their progress on a national stage. Williams was selected first overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, while Maye went third. Their careers will inevitably invite comparisons because of their shared draft class.
For now, Williams has the latest individual recognition. Maye has the opportunity to help New England extend its winning streak. The Patriots and Bears kick off Thursday at 8:15 p.m. ET at Soldier Field. With both teams holding winning records and their quarterbacks playing well, the matchup could become one of Week 7's most entertaining games.
