The Pittsburgh Steelers will face the New Orleans Saints on Sunday in the first-ever NFL game hosted in Paris, France. Unfortunately, looming over the game are the violent riots and protests that have swept the city of Paris due to the cost of living and poor conditions in schools and universities.

Paris has literally burned as hundreds of thousands flooded the streets in protest of rising living costs and poor conditions in schools. French police have arrested over 1,800 violent demonstrators who have set fires, looted, and attacked public buildings, leading French President Emmanuel Macron to hold an emergency meeting with top government officials on Sunday.

The NFL has maintained that although it will increase security around the game, the game will go on as planned. However, on Thursday, the league’s hand was forced just a bit, as it had to cancel a fan event that’d been scheduled.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming fans to France for the first-ever regular season NFL game, as the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the New Orleans Saints this Sunday. Following recent events in the Bastille neighborhood, and after careful consideration, we felt it appropriate not to move forward with the planned Steelers House fan event in Paris,” the Steelers announced via statement.

Steelers are cancelling their fan event in Paris. Not a shocker.

“Preparations for Sunday’s NFL Paris game at Stade de France continue as planned, with the NFL working closely with local authorities and partners on all operational and security matters. Fans can find the latest information on NFL events taking place across Paris throughout the week via the NFL OnePass app.

“Thank you for your understanding, and we look forward to welcoming you to Paris and Stade de France for Sunday’s game.”

This has the potential to be the first of what becomes a string of cancellations surrounding the league’s Paris events for Sunday’s game. Steelers star T.J. Watt’s wife, Dani, has already made it clear that she feels the game should be cancelled.

Hoepfully, things don’t escalate to that point.
