Dominik Szoboszlai’s hamstring problem has shaped Liverpool’s midfield plans this month.
Sky Sports’ latest training report keeps it in focus before Sunday’s Premier League game.
The Hungarian started each of Liverpool’s opening five league games under new head coach Andoni Iraola.
Szoboszlai returned from international duty with a tight hamstring and missed the 3-0 home defeat by Manchester City on 11 October. He also sat out the 6-3 Champions League win at LASK three days later.
His absence opened the door for Trey Nyoni. The 19-year-old academy graduate made his first Champions League start in Austria and played 85 minutes.
Iraola described Nyoni as “really smart” tactically. The head coach also challenged him to keep up his level in training.
Dominik Szoboszlai came back into the side at Brentford on Saturday but went off after about half an hour. Nyoni replaced him, and Liverpool won 2-1 through goals from Víctor Munoz and Alexander Isak.
Iraola told Sky Sports afterwards that the injury was the same one. “It’s not another injury, he’s still not healed,” he said.
Munoz, Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong were absent, and Szoboszlai is out for one to three games.
Bradley Barcola, who set up Isak’s winner at Brentford, was not shown on the Sky cameras. He was doing an individual recovery session, and it is not yet clear whether that affects his availability for Sunday.
Frimpong replaced Ronald Araujo at half-time at Brentford and lasted seven minutes before leaving with a new muscle injury.
He is out for around four weeks, and Iraola has said a return before the November international break would be difficult.
Munoz is recovering from a knock to the knee. He missed Tuesday’s Champions League game against Villarreal.
Liverpool still won that game 4-3 after trailing 2-0. Nyoni started in midfield alongside Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister and played until the 81st minute.
According to Sky Sports, Dominik Szoboszlai could miss three important fixtures.
He is expected to miss Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Brighton on Sunday, the Carabao Cup tie against Chelsea on Wednesday, and the Premier League clash with champions Arsenal on Sunday, November 1.
However, he could return for the Champions League clash with Fenerbahce on November 4, and the trip to Selhurst Park on November 8, before the international break.
“We’re told Barcola is undergoing an individual training session”
