Former Badgers star JJ Watt named lead analyst for ‘NFL on CBS’

(CBS) -Three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year JJ Watt has signed a multi-year contract to become the lead game analyst for the “NFL on CBS,” network officials announced Thursday.

Watt will call the network’s top matchups alongside play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson, a role that will culminate next season with the broadcast of Super Bowl LXII in Atlanta.

The former college star, who played for the Wisconsin Badgers before being selected 11th overall by the Houston Texans in the 2011 NFL Draft, joined CBS Sports in 2023 as a studio analyst on “The NFL Today.”

He transitioned to the broadcast booth last season alongside Ian Eagle and Evan Washburn before taking over lead game analyst duties with Nantz and Wolfson at the start of the 2026 season.

Watt retired from the NFL following the 2022 season after a 12-year playing career with the Texans and Arizona Cardinals, finishing with 114.5 career sacks and earning five First-Team All-Pro selections.
