Ranking Super Bowl Lxi contenders entering NFL Week 7

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (15) and Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid pre game against the Jets at MetLife Stadium.

Week 6 gave the NFL’s unbeaten contenders reasons to feel good. But the championship case extends beyond the scoreboard and standings.

Can QB1 function when options disappear? Can the line protect him? Can the defense survive without taking the ball away? If a team can’t answer those questions, it doesn’t belong in this report. Period.

Here is how the top teams rank:

Just missing the cut

Seattle Seahawks:

Mike Macdonald’s defense and Jaxon Smith-Njigba keep Seattle firmly in this conversation. The offense keeps supplying reasons to hesitate. The Seahawks allowed five sacks and 17 quarterback hits in Denver, and their three losses have included 10 turnovers. That is too much damage for even an excellent defense to keep repairing.

New England Patriots:

Drake Maye’s improvement and the win at Buffalo give New England legitimate substance. Three straight victories help, too. But the giveaways persist, and guards Alijah Vera-Tucker and Ben Brown are out against Chicago. The Patriots keep finding ways through difficult circumstances, but their protection depth still makes a long playoff run difficult to trust.

Chicago Bears:

Caleb Williams returned in Atlanta and immediately made Ben Johnson’s offense more convincing. The passing ceiling belongs alongside a productive running game. Still, the healthy-quarterback version has only three starts behind it, and injuries and Montez Sweat’s suspension are testing defensive depth. Chicago still needs both phases working together consistently.

Denver Broncos:

Denver’s defense produced five sacks and three takeaways against Seattle, adding another meaningful win to victories over Jacksonville and the Rams. The offense managed 168 yards and no second-half points. Defensive disruption keeps the Broncos relevant, but Bo Nix and the supporting cast need to supply something more sustainable than waiting for another rescue.

7. Cincinnati Bengals

Cincinnati comes out of its bye with Joe Burrow’s passing options restored. His four touchdowns at Miami showed the value of having Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins back, even with help from short fields. Amarius Mims allowed pressure on just 4% of his pass-blocking snaps through five games, according to Next Gen Stats. That is one tackle’s performance, but it matters.

The defense remains vulnerable to outside runs and quarterback scrambles, and Tanner Hudson’s season-ending pectoral injury tests tight end depth. Baltimore immediately challenges those edges, and Derrick Henry is enough trouble regardless of Lamar Jackson’s availability. December home games against Kansas City and Baltimore will test protection and possession control. Burrow, encouraging blocking and a front that creates pressure without heavy blitzing, give Cincinnati the edge over Seattle.

6. Minnesota Vikings

Previous: Unranked | New to the top seven

Minnesota’s last game before the bye supplied something its championship case needed: help for the defense. In the 23-13 win at New Orleans, Kyler Murray extended possessions with his legs, Justin Jefferson returned, and Aaron Jones ran for 113 yards. Sustaining that progress is the problem. The offense remains 27th in SumerSports’ EPA-per-play rankings, while season-ending losses to Donovan Jackson and Josh Oliver complicate protection and blocking depth.

Indianapolis visits next, and Buffalo on November 9 and San Francisco in Mexico City on November 22 will test whether the offense can keep producing after its first plan stalls. Returning starters could help, but Brian Flores’ defense is the reason the Vikings enter. Its leading efficiency numbers cover only five games, yet the resistance has been substantial enough to support an imperfect offense. That defensive foundation earns Minnesota the edge.

5. Baltimore Ravens

Baltimore’s 13-10 loss in Cleveland was more than another game without Lamar Jackson. The Ravens stopped scoring after the first quarter, lost a costly Derrick Henry fumble and surrendered the late uncovered completion that helped decide it. Jackson returned to limited practice Wednesday, but his availability against Cincinnati remains unsettled. His ankle is the biggest issue. Getting him back would not automatically fix the interior protection or coverage communication.

Cincinnati begins a stretch that continues in Buffalo before a Thursday visit from Jacksonville, testing recovery and depth against offenses that punish mistakes. Trey Hendrickson’s return strengthens the pass rush. With a healthy Jackson alongside Henry and a productive front, Baltimore has a higher ceiling than the developing teams below it. The uncertain return and repeated mistakes keep the Ravens here.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars

Previous: No. 3 | Down 1

Trevor Lawrence threw for 306 yards and four touchdowns at Wembley, and Jacksonville still lost 34-31 to Houston. The comeback confirmed an offense capable of recovering when plans fall apart. Allowing 426 yards showed why it cannot keep living that way. Lawrence’s end-zone interception was costly, too. Coverage and protection remain the January concerns, with Anton Harrison on injured reserve and Walker Little at left tackle.

The bye offers time for corrections before Indianapolis visits, followed by a short turnaround for a Thursday trip to Baltimore. December’s rematch in Houston will show whether Jacksonville fixed the coverage problems. Liam Coen gives Lawrence multiple answers, and Travis Hunter adds playmaking on both sides of the ball. Jacksonville stays fourth because the broader case remains balanced and its starting quarterback is producing. Buffalo’s more dependable scoring earns the edge.

3. Buffalo Bills

Previous: No. 4 | Up 1

Las Vegas limited Josh Allen’s running opportunities, and Buffalo kept scoring anyway. Quicker decisions, efficient distribution and James Cook helped produce points on seven of nine possessions, excluding the kneel-down, in a 33-30 win. The defense keeps making that adaptability necessary. Buffalo ranks 30th in defensive EPA per play, according to SumerSports. Creative coverage assignments and timely stops have not made it a reliable unit.

After the bye, Baltimore visits before Buffalo faces Brian Flores’ defense in Minnesota, a revealing test of Allen’s patience and processing. Thanksgiving against Kansas City asks whether the Bills can support their offense with enough stops. Allen’s ability to adjust, with Cook supplying another route to sustained offense, earns the move up. The defensive gap keeps Buffalo behind the top two.

2. Kansas City Chiefs

Previous: No. 2 | No change

Kansas City’s 22-6 win over the Chargers showed what help for Patrick Mahomes looks like – 128 rushing yards and two touchdowns from Kenneth Walker, plus a defense that controlled the game. The pass rush ended a three-game sackless stretch, but one afternoon against a winless opponent does not establish dominance. Protection and availability remain concerns with Josh Simmons’ back issue, Jaylon Moore’s concussion and Rashee Rice’s hamstring injury.

Seattle on Sunday night and Denver afterward will challenge that protection more seriously. Thanksgiving in Buffalo tests whether Kansas City can keep pace while creating stops against Allen. Mahomes and Andy Reid can lean on a useful running game and a defense they can trust. That gives Kansas City more ways to control a game and keeps it second, even while its tackle situation remains a weakness opponents can attack.

1. San Francisco 49ers

Previous: No. 1 | No change

San Francisco’s 23-17 win over Washington offered two versions of the offense – 303 yards before halftime, only 72 afterward. Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey built the lead, then the defense preserved it. Mike Evans left with Achilles tendinitis, the receiving group remains depleted and Nick Bosa missed another game with knee/calf issues.

Atlanta comes next on a short turnaround before the bye. Later, Minnesota in Mexico City and the home rematch with Seattle will show whether Purdy and Kyle Shanahan can keep solving disruptive defenses. McCaffrey’s running and receiving give them answers, while wins over Denver and Seattle add substance to the unbeaten start. Kansas City is close, but San Francisco’s quarterback efficiency, offensive flexibility and defensive resistance still earn the top spot.
