Luis Diaz was in inspired form for Bayern Munich last weekend, scoring a hat-trick in a 6-1 demolition of RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga last weekend.
The Colombian winger, who left Liverpool for Bayern in the summer of 2025, converted three times to continue an electric run of form in Germany.
That display took Diaz’s tally to four goals and an assist across his previous two appearances for Bayern heading into the club’s Champions League meeting with Arsenal on Wednesday night.
Despite the form, Vincent Kompany opted to leave him out of the starting line-up at the Allianz Arena, with Alphonso Davies deployed on the left instead.
Diaz was introduced from the bench in the 68th minute, replacing Ismael Saibari as Bayern searched for a way back into the contest.
Arsenal had taken the lead through Eberechi Eze before Davies levelled, and Harry Kane’s penalty put the hosts in front in the second half.
The match finished 2-2 after Declan Rice equalised for Arsenal in the 82nd minute, but the result was overshadowed by events late on.
In the 90th minute, Diaz went down without contact and had to be withdrawn, replaced by Bara Ndiaye.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl confirmed after the game that Diaz had been managing a muscular issue before kick-off.
“He already had muscular problems before the game and felt it slightly again now,” Eberl said. “We didn’t want to take any risks.”
Bayern have now confirmed the full extent of the problem.
According to the club, Diaz has been diagnosed with a minor muscle fibre tear in his left hamstring and will be sidelined for the time being. No definitive return date has been given.
Kompany had initially sounded a cautious but hopeful note after the Arsenal draw.
“I don’t think it’s serious. But when it happens twice in a short time, then it’s something to worry about a bit,” the Bayern head coach said.
Diaz himself played down the issue in the immediate aftermath, telling reporters: “It is not serious. Maybe I will just rest for a few days.”
The confirmed tear now interrupts the best run of form Diaz has produced since his move from Liverpool. His four goals and one assist in his two previous outings had marked a turnaround after a slow start to the campaign with his new club.
