Jordan Mason ready for return as Vikings host Colts Sunday

The Minnesota Vikings have enjoyed a perfect start to the season, but wide receiver Justin Jefferson says the team’s 5-0 record means little if complacency begins to set in.

Coming off an early bye week, the Vikings return to action Sunday when they host the Indianapolis Colts at noon at U.S. Bank Stadium.

“It honestly feels great to come in here 5-0,” Jefferson said. “But it’s definitely not a time to get complacent and not a time to really let our hair down.”

Minnesota enters Week 7 with confidence after a strong offensive showing before the bye, particularly in a victory over New Orleans that showcased the growing connection between Jefferson and quarterback Kyler Murray.

Jefferson said the chemistry seen in that game was a glimpse of what the offense can become once the unit is healthy.

“We played a full game together,” Jefferson said. “We kind of said that at the beginning of the season, what it would most likely look like with the scramble drills, him using his feet to extend plays and get us those first downs.”

Murray’s mobility has added another layer for opposing defenses to account for, Jefferson said, creating opportunities for Minnesota’s playmakers in both the passing and running games.

Despite the undefeated record, Jefferson believes the offense has yet to reach its ceiling.

“We definitely haven’t got that full potential yet,” he said. “We haven’t had everybody out there at the same time.”

The Vikings’ balanced attack has been fueled by a productive rushing game, which Jefferson said has helped open opportunities through the air.

“The run game helps the pass game. The pass game helps the run game,” Jefferson said. “We’re going to run the ball for sure, but we’re also going to throw the ball and have those big shots downfield as well.”

One player who could provide another boost to the rushing attack is running back Jordan Mason, who appears poised to make his return after missing the start of the season.

Mason admitted it has been difficult watching from the sideline while the Vikings piled up victories.

“Very anxious,” Mason said. “I love what the boys have already been doing. I really want to be able to bring my little two cents in and help out.”

Rather than dwelling on his absence, Mason said he focused on finding ways to contribute.

“I took a step back and actually said, ‘How can I be important to this team right now?'” Mason said. “I was a little hype man for a little bit.”

Mason is especially eager to rejoin fellow running back Aaron Jones, who has carried the bulk of the workload through the first five games.

“He’s already been carrying the load,” Mason said. “I’m just there to help out.”

Defensively, the Vikings face a Colts offense featuring running back Jonathan Taylor and a physical offensive line led by All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson.

Linebacker Blake Cashman said Minnesota’s defenders understand the challenge ahead.

“When you got a really talented back behind a guy like that, it can give a defense problems,” Cashman said. “We have to be very detailed in our run assignments come Sunday.”

Cashman also praised defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen for Minnesota’s success against the run through the season’s first five games.

“He’s so intentional and detailed,” Cashman said. “He paints a really good picture for us as a defense at each level on what we should expect to see and how we need to play.”

The Vikings have also received key contributions from younger players on both defense and special teams. Cashman pointed to linebacker Jake Golday’s development, saying his special teams experience has accelerated his growth and helped prepare him for a larger defensive role.

As for the bye week, Jefferson said the challenge now is maintaining the urgency that helped Minnesota reach 5-0.

The Colts enter Sunday’s matchup looking to rebound from a loss, while the Vikings hope to continue building momentum before the midpoint of the season.

“We all understand what’s out there in front of us,” Jefferson said. “I like us.”
