FC Barcelona have begun negotiations to improve and extend Brian Farinas’ contract despite the young midfielder yet to feature for Hansi Flick’s first team, according to Catalunya Radio.

The La Liga champions are considering adding one or two years to his current deal, which runs until the summer of 2028, while also discussing a salary increase and a higher release clause.

The negotiations reflect Barcelona’s desire to secure the future of a player who earned promotion to the senior squad after impressing during pre-season.

However, his lack of competitive minutes could become a factor in January if his situation does not change.

According to the report, Barcelona are exploring an extension of either one or two seasons, potentially keeping Farinas at the club until 2029 or 2030.

The proposed changes would also improve his wages and increase his release clause.

The La Masia midfielder’s current contract expires in 2028, leaving Barcelona keen to address his situation well before he enters the final year of his agreement.

The Blaugrana have been working to protect the futures of several young players as they establish themselves within Flick’s first-team plans.

Farinas, who joined Barcelona’s youth system in 2018 after arriving from Villarreal, was officially promoted to the first-team squad this season and given the No. 4 shirt.

His versatility in midfield and performances during pre-season helped win over manager Hansi Flick, especially at a time when Frenkie de Jong was out injured.

Despite earning promotion, Farinas has yet to make a competitive appearance for Barcelona’s senior side this season.

Flick has previously praised his talent, fitness and commitment, but opportunities have been limited amid serious competition for places in midfield.

As such, the report indicates that the situation could change in January if the 20-year-old continues to go without minutes.

That does not necessarily mean Barcelona will consider selling him, but playing opportunities could become an important factor in determining his next steps.

For the club, the challenge is to balance a long-term commitment to a promising academy graduate with a realistic pathway into the first team.

Improving his contract would strengthen Barcelona’s position, but Farinas will also want to see progress in his sporting role.
