The Jets 2026 Rookie class needed only six games to showcase their potential. It hasn’t been perfect. These three rookies still have a lot to learn in their first NFL season. But the New York Jets can feel confident that the 2026 NFL Draft gave them three potential long-term building blocks.

In April, New York Jets general manager Darren Mougey shocked analysts with three first-round picks. The Jets 2026 Draft class started off with three major talents who shined in college football last year. The second overall pick was used on Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey, who led the NCAA in sacks. The 16th overall pick acquired from the Indianapolis Colts via the Sauce Gardner trade brought them All-American tight end Kenyon Sadiq out of Oregon. Finally, after trading up back into the first round, the 30th overall pick led the Jets to get Indiana Hoosiers wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr.

Through the first six weeks of the season, while the Jets as a whole continue to find their way, their first-round picks have quickly made a strong first impression. Even though the team is 2-4, the Jets 2026 draft class is on the brink of something special. Through the first six weeks of the season, three of the Pepsi Rookie of the Week awards have gone to the Jets’ first-round picks.

Kenyon Sadiq won in Week 3 after his breakout game during the Lions loss. David Bailey’s three-sack performance in the Cleveland Browns win in Week 5. After returning from IR, Omar Cooper Jr.’s first full game of his career in Week 6 resulted in him capturing the award this week.

Jets 2026 Rookie Class Gives Glimpse of Bright Future

The 2025 season was one the New York Jets wished to forget. A 3-14 record, the only team in over 90 years to play a whole season without an interception, the league’s worst passing offense, and the second-worst defense in the league, ahead of only the Dallas Cowboys. The Jets needed to address some major holes in the 2026 offseason.

The coaching staff got an overhaul with new offensive and defensive coordinators arriving. The offseason saw the return of 2013 second-round pick Geno Smith to replace Justin Fields at starting quarterback and lead offensive coordinator Frank Reich’s revamped offense. On defense, head coach Aaron Glenn opted to return to play-calling duties, while adding veterans like safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and linebacker Demario Davis, who entered his third stint with the team. But those were only band-aids for long-term issues. Luckily, for them, the Jets 2026 NFL draft allowed them to address multiple areas across the team.

Jets 2026 Rookie David Bailey Shows Double-Digit Sack Potential as Second Overall Pick

Entering the 2026 NFL Draft, the second overall pick debate became one of the most talked-about aspects of the event. It was something that split the fanbase as the topic of the Jets 2026 Draft came down to two sides for the second overall pick: either Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese or Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey. At the end of the day, it was Bailey who would wind up being selected, while Reese would also begin his NFL career in New Jersey after being picked fifth overall by the New York Giants.

With high expectations entering the season, thus far the second overall pick has delivered. Through the first six games of the season, Bailey is tied for sixth in the league with five sacks, along with 18 total tackles, and currently in a six-way tie as the league’s forced fumbles leader along with San Francisco 49ers linebacker Fred Warner, Las Vegas Raiders linebacker Nakobe Dean, Cleveland Browns linebacker Qunicy Williams, Buffalo Bills edge rusher Fred Rousseau, and Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter.

The prized pick of the Jets 2026 made his presence known in David Bailey’s breakout game in Week 5. In only his second home game at MetLife Stadium, Jets faithful watched Bailey impact firsthand in an ugly, rainy win vs. the Cleveland Browns. During the Jets 17-12 win, Bailey finished with three sacks, seven total tackles, and four quarterback hits. Bailey’s big game earned him his first Pepsi Rookie of the Week honors, becoming the second Jets rookie to do so after tight end Kenyon Sadiq.

Tight End Kenyon Sadiq Might Be the Best Value Pick of the Jets 2026 Rookies

After addressing defense with the second overall pick, many analysts assumed the second pick in the Jets 2026 draft would be used on a wide receiver. New York had their pick of wide receivers available between USC’s Makai Lemon, Texas A&M’s KC Concepcion, and Indiana’s Omar Cooper Jr. So it came as a shock to many when Roger Goodell announced that New York selected Oregon tight end Kenyon Sadiq at 16th overall. It came as a shock since 2025 second-round pick Mason Taylor not only became the team’s starting tight end, but also led the Jets in both targets and catches last year.

However, his time at Oregon proved Sadiq is more than a traditional tight end. Lining up in multiple formations in 2025, Sadiq was a Swiss Army knife for Will Stein’s offense at Oregon. After missing most of training camp while recovering from hernia surgery, the rookie tight end took little time to make a great first impression. His three-yard touchdown run on the Jets opening drive of the season vs. the Titans demonstrated his versatility in short-yardage situations.

While his production has taken a dip due to a lack of targets (10 total targets with three catches over the last three games), Sadiq had a huge game in Week 3 vs. the Detroit Lions. During the loss, the tight end finished the game with seven catches on eight targets, along with his first touchdown reception and 105 receiving yards. Even though they lost, Sadiq’s game earned him Rookie of the Week honors.

Omar Cooper Jr. needed just one full game to become an impact player for the Jets 2026 Rookies

Rounding out our trio of first-round picks is Hoosiers National Champion wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. After an exciting 30-yard play during the opening drive of the season, Cooper Jr. unfortunately suffered an ankle sprain that saw him wind up on IR. However, the young playmaker made his presence felt against the New England Patriots.

The wide receiver finished his first full NFL game with six catches on seven targets for 103 yards. Including an impressive 48-yard touchdown pass from Geno Smith three plays into their opening drive of the second half. Cooper Jr. even wound up with more targets than Garrett Wilson. After missing Adonai Mitchell the last four games, the Jets offense needed a wide receiver besides Wilson to step up, and the former Hoosier welcomed the challenge and earned himself a Pepsi Rookie of the Week award. A healthy Omar Cooper Jr. adds great route running and breakaway speed that can easily help Smith when he’s under duress and Wilson is double covered.

The Last Word

With 11 games remaining in the 2026 season, a lot of things can change. But thus far, Darren Mougey’s 2026 Jets draft class has put the league on notice. David Bailey is taking strides to elevate the defense and raise their ceiling as a pass rusher. Meanwhile, despite questionable play calling from Frank Reich, the additions of Kenyon Sadiq and Omar Cooper Jr. provide the Jets aerial attack with more versatility than the team has seen since the Chad Pennington years. With three first-round picks in 2027, the New York Jets can gain six impact players joining the team over the last two years that can have a major impact on their long-term outlook.
