Alexis Mac Allister’s return to form has been a huge positive for Liverpool this season, but what’s the latest regarding a new contract for the Argentine?
The 27-year-old has been one of the Reds’ standout players so far this season, responding superbly after making it clear what his thoughts were about not being given a fresh deal:
“I received the news that the club was not in a position to offer me a new contract, which of course makes me very, very sad,” he told reporters on Tuesday. Everyone can see I give 100 percent for this football club, every single day in training, games.
“Of course, I can have very good games, bad games, like everyone, but I always give my best. I see Dominik and Ryan renewing their contracts and that makes me very happy because they deserve it, but at the same time it makes me a little bit sad that I didn’t get mine.”
Mac Allister is out of contract at Liverpool in the summer of 2028, but on current evidence, retaining his services would surely be the best outcome for the club.
But according to The Telegraph‘s reliable Dominic King, the Reds are “not in any rush” to discuss a new deal for the World Cup winner currently, despite his superb form.
That said, he claims that if Mac Allister “keeps playing with this zip, he can change that situation”, as he continues to look far better than he did last season.
Alexis Mac Allister deserves new Liverpool deal for many reasons
I, like many, would have been happy to see Mac Allister leave Liverpool this summer, with the midfielder looking a shadow of his former self in 2025/26, having no legs and losing possession at will.
But thankfully, he has made many of us look foolish, producing so many good performances so far this season, and he spoke positively about life under Andoni Iraola this week:
“The way we play it is quite different. I don’t like to compare. I’m feeling good right now, that’s what I want, and that’s what I enjoy. From the first day we started working together, I saw something really important,” he said.
“I think we are going in the right direction but if you look at the game today, it was far from perfect so we need to work, keep giving everything. It’s a really important year for us so hopefully we can win some trophies.”
Mac Allister deserves so much praise for his form, not allowing the lack of a contract extension to get him down, and instead showing a huge amount of quality, scoring four goals in 2026/27 to date.
He is a winner, which is a priceless attribute in any footballer, and it is sometimes easy to forget that he is still only 27, meaning he should still have plenty of years left in him at the top level.
That new deal would be richly deserved, and as things stand, it would be a surprise if it didn’t come his way.
