Luka Doncic, Yaxel Lendeborg went toe-to-toe in intense NBA season opener matchup
Golden State Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg and Los Angeles Lakers superstar Luka Doncic went at it in a highly physical and vocal confrontation during the 2026-27 NBA regular-season opening night last Wednesday.
Lendeborg boldly assumed the task of defending Doncic amid the Warriors' injuries. As such, tempers flared dramatically late in the second quarter when Doncic successfully caught Lendeborg with a pump-fake at the top of the key, drawing a shooting foul and immediately trash-talking the rookie after the whistle blew.
The ongoing physical play and constant back-and-forth barking ultimately resulted in Lendeborg getting hit with a technical foul. Right after their heated exchange, Doncic silenced Lendeborg's trash talk by drilling a spectacular, buzzer-beating half-court shot to close out the first half.
The feud escalated further after the game when Lendeborg told reporters he "lost all respect" for Doncic due to his constant whining and foul baiting. On the other hand, the Slovenian responded to the exchange by noting that the rookie was "talking crazy" on the floor.
Despite Lendeborg's solid primary defensive stand, Doncic got the last laugh with a game-high 28 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists to orchestrate a 127-105 blowout victory for the Lakers.
Doncic and Lendeborg will meet again next Friday at the Chase Center in San Francisco, as the Lakers will visit the Warriors for an NBA Cup group stage play.
