Erik Spoelstra criticizes Heat guard for triggering Anthony Edwards historic scoring

Erik Spoelstra isn't a fan of how Myron Gardner poked the bear at Anthony Edwards, which triggered the Minnesota Timberwolves superstar on a historic season debut night to dominate the Miami Heat.

As the Heat guard was never made available to talk to the media on Thursday, Spoelstra personally admitted that trash-talking while on the bench is unacceptable

"I love Myron's competitive spirit and he wants to infuse energy into the group. Also have to be smart about it. I particularly don't want him talking trash to the other team's best scorers, especially when he's not out there," Spoelstra told reporters, per Eric Nehm of The Athletic.

"But he's got a good heart. He means the right thing. He'll be better."

Anthony Edwards triggered by Myron Gardner trash-talk, leading to historic season debut

Anthony Edwards dominated with a historic 45 points with eight rebounds and five assists in the Minnesota Timberwolves' 131-106 blowout victory against the Miami Heat to kickstart their 2026-27 NBA season.

Fueled by the trash talk from the Miami bench, Edwards put on an exceptionally efficient shooting clinic across 35 minutes of action. The superstar admitted in his postgame that the heated exchange with Myron Gardner motivated his performance.

"A player on they bench was talkin trash on one of the dead ball situations. He was talkin pretty crazy. And then when I started talkin to him he didn’t really have too much more to say," Edwards told reporters after the game

"And I don’t really like that. Like, if you gonna talk sh**, keep talkin sh**. Don’t get quiet."

The Heat and the Timberwolves will face each other again on Feb. 6 next year at the Target Center.
