Facing LeBron James in Philadelphia against the 76ers, the Cavs failed to make a statement in a miserable choke job.
They blew their 29-point lead from halftime and subsequently endured an embarrassing 114-106 loss in their Thursday season opener.
Cavs commit historic choke vs. LeBron James, 76ers
For such plenty of reasons, the Cleveland Cavaliers committed an all-time meltdown in their loss against the Philadelphia 76ers.
As the 76ers enjoyed the positive side of history, the Cavaliers, meanwhile, suffered a historic collapse on the other end.
The 76ers pulled off the biggest comeback of their franchise's history in the play-by-play era (since 1996–97), overcoming the Cavs' massive 29-point deficit.
Cleveland had previously gone 155-0 when holding such leads, while Philadelphia was 0-156 in those situations. As such, the comeback also snapped the NBA’s streak of 466 consecutive regular-season wins by teams that built a 29-point lead.
The Cavs already led 69-40 entering the closing moments of the first half. Since then, they have comfortably allowed the Sixers to roar back and pull off the epic win.
As Donovan Mitchell was the only one who showed up with 32 points, the Cavs crumbled in the second half, dropping 21 points in the third quarter and a miserable 16 points in the fourth quarter. The final blow was executed in Philly's 15-0 run in the final frame, stripping Cleveland of its remaining margin.
Mitchell and the Cavs will look to bounce back against the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday.
