Things got heated between Charles Barkley and Shaquille O’Neal on the Inside the NBA show once again. Ahead of tonight’s game between the 76ers and the Cavaliers, the duo addressed an online debate about why LeBron James is the GOAT, focusing on his four Hall of Fame-worthy stints with different teams.
Ernie Johnson initially showed a graphic highlighting LeBron James’ key achievements with each team he joined, sparking the debate. He argued that LeBron James arguably deserves Hall of Fame recognition for each stint.
“Well, coz he stacked the teams,” Charles Barkley said as Shaquille O’Neal sighed in frustration. “Okay, well I guess he got six to seven championships then, oh wait, he don’t,” Barkley added.
“Well, he’s got four,” O’Neal responded.
“And Michael Jordan got six, so quit comparing them. He stacked his team every time. Well, I got nothing but respect for LeBron, but don’t sit up there and tell me he’s got four Hall of Fame careers. If he stacks his team like that, he should have more than four championships,” Barkley added with no hesitation.
“You were working up a lather here early,” Ernie Johnson replied.
“Because y’all are pissing me off. And not you, Kenny, and not you, Ernie (so clearly just Shaquille O’Neal). You’re going to put that up and say he’s got four Hall of Fame careers because he stacked his team,” Barkley said as he pointed at O’Neal.
“Ernie, based on what you just said, I agree. He’s had a great career. They always talk about who the best player is. You should always mention three names, in my opinion: Kobe, LeBron, and Jordan,” O’Neal said.
“I don’t care who you pick; you should always mention those three guys. He has all the stats. He stacked his team. That’s what you’re supposed to do. You’re supposed to go upstairs to your general manager and say, ‘I want this guy. I want this guy. I want this guy.'”
A shouting match followed as Shaquille O’Neal claimed even Charles Barkley stacked his team during his time with the Suns, while Barkley objected, saying he was traded to the Suns, so he never had the influence to ask for players by name.
Barkley also fired back, saying O’Neal went to the front office because he needed help, while O’Neal claimed a superstar’s role is to envision the team he wants to play with to contend for a championship.
“You were a baby, you had Kobe and Dwyane, and you still needed more,” Barkley added as he began sweating profusely. The crew brought him towels to wipe it off.
“Kenny, that ain’t sweat, that’s BSJ coming out of your pores,” O’Neal quipped. “Telling me you stacked your teams? That’s what you’re supposed to do. Go to your GM and say you need this guy, this guy, and this guy,” O’Neal concluded before they moved on to the rest of the show.

LeBron James was a two-time MVP, Six-time All-NBA, 2008 scoring title, and 2007 NBA Finals appearance in his first stint with the Cavaliers (2003-10). Followed by two-time MVP, four-time All-NBA, two NBA titles, and four NBA Finals appearances with the Heat (2010-14).
When James returned to the Cavaliers for his second stint, he was a four-time All-NBA First Team selection, finished top-5 in MVP voting four times, and won the iconic 2016 NBA title (2014-18).
With the Lakers, he was a seven-time All-NBA selection, won the 2020 NBA Title, became the first 40-year-old player to make an All-NBA team, and set the all-time scoring record.
LeBron James’ achievements across three teams make a strong case for his status as one of the greatest players of all time, despite Barkley’s consistent criticisms over time. It’s still up for debate, though, if each stint counts as a Hall of Fame career.
While the discussion wasn’t even about Michael Jordan directly, Barkley’s strong remarks in the tense exchange brought back the evergreen debate about James, Michael Jordan, and determining who the GOAT is.
Do you think each stint in LeBron James’ career deserves a separate Hall of Fame recognition? Let us know what you think in the comments section.
