Liverpool are not prepared to hand Alexis Mac Allister a long-term contract due to his age, according to journalist David Lynch.

Speaking to the Anfield Index, Lynch said that despite the Argentinian international’s “absolutely brilliant” form, he would be shocked if the Reds were willing to hand Mac Allister the sort of extension he is looking for:

“I still would be massively surprised if there was a U-turn at this point on him, to be honest.”

“Not because he’s not playing absolutely brilliantly, but I think his next contract he’ll probably be looking for five years. He’s 28 in the next couple of months. Is that the kind of contract Liverpool will offer him? I’d be really surprised.”

Mac Allister could be sold next summer

The midfielder‘s current deal expires in 2028, so a decision on his future will have to be made either way at the end of the season.

Liverpool have been known to run down contracts. The likes of Ibrahima Konate, Georginio Wijnaldum and Emre Can are just a few examples where key players have been allowed to leave on free transfers.

It’s usually the case, though, that the club have failed to find an agreement with their agents over an extension.

With Mac Allister, it is the opposite situation, whereby the player is willing to come to the table, but the club are more reluctant.

The Liverpool star will not be short of suitors

Mac Allister’s performances in recent weeks will undoubtedly attract the attention of other teams.

Manchester City were said to be among those who were keen on recruiting the 27-year-old in the summer, but their decision to pay £125m for Enzo Fernandez on Deadline Day has likely ended their pursuit.

Real Madrid have also been linked with Mac Allister on and off in recent years, so a move to Spain cannot be ruled out either.
