NFL Stunner: Giants Coach Exposes Own Roster As "Traitors" After Saints Collapse 1
The New York Giants lost to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. By Thursday, Dennard Wilson had seen enough to call out his own players.
The Giants defensive coordinator publicly criticized players who failed to pursue the ball in the 34-27 loss. He warned that unacceptable effort could lead to personnel changes, putting the defense under pressure ahead of its Week 7 matchup against the Houston Texans.
Dennard Wilson Calls Players “Traitors” After Saints Collapse
Wilson described players who do not run to the ball as “traitors to the defense.” He did not stop at the label, and he made the team’s options explicit.

“If you don’t change the behaviors, we have to change the players,” Wilson said in comments shared by Big Blue View.
The frustration followed a collapse that began after New York built a 10-0 lead. The Saints scored 34 unanswered points and finished with 175 rushing yards.

The defensive coordinator did not name the players responsible. The missed-effort plays involving safeties Jason Pinnock and Jevón Holland on Alvin Kamara’s 31-yard touchdown catch-and-run early in the third quarter made the problem visible.
Giants Must Prove Wilson’s Warning Can Change Defensive Effort
Cornerback Dru Phillips acknowledged his part in the performance, calling it “embarrassing” to be called out in front of teammates.
Phillips also recognized how one player’s effort affects everyone else. “You have 10 other guys depending on you as well,” he said via Big Blue View. He accepted that there was no excuse and said he needed to hustle.

Wilson insisted that these issues be addressed openly in defensive meetings and in front of the full team. “If you’re not doing something to help the team and you’re hurting the team, if your effort is bad, if you have a lack of toughness, it gets pointed out,” he said.
That approach makes the criticism more than an emotional reaction to one defeat. Effort is difficult to hide on film, and Wilson is presenting it as a standard that protects the identity the staff is trying to build.

The next test arrives Sunday against Houston, which has won two straight after opening the season 0-4. Head coach John Harbaugh said the Giants need to “play our best football” against a tough Texans team.
Wilson’s warning will mean little if New York repeats the tackling and pursuit failures that let the Saints take control.
