José Mourinho is back in the dugout and he needs a Clásico victory to keep pace at the top of La Liga, but where will Barcelona vs Real Madrid be won and lost?
By the end of the weekend, most teams in La Liga will have played just 10 matches, but the title race may be very nearly over for another season.
The frontrunners and reigning champions Barcelona head into Sunday’s El Clásico already six points ahead of fierce rivals Real Madrid. It’s Madrid’s biggest points difference to the league leaders at this stage of the competition since the 2012-13 season.
Hansi Flick’s side have won all nine of their games, and if they make it 10 from 10, they will have opened up a nine-point gap that could well prove unassailable.

It’s obviously too soon to say the title race would be over this early, and Atlético Madrid’s position in second place means there is quite obviously still plenty to play for regardless of the result.
But there is no escaping just how big Sunday’s match feels for Real Madrid. Lose, and they will be a long, long way back, potentially surrendering a third straight title to Barcelona.
So, can Madrid win at the Camp Nou and ignite the title race? Or will Barça extend their winning start and continue their procession towards another league trophy? Here are five key factors that may influence the result.
The José Effect
This game is always box office, but the return of José Mourinho to the Madrid dugout adds another layer of intrigue to this weekend’s match.
Even during the era of peak Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, Mourinho still sometimes managed to grab the headlines. The most infamous of his Clásico contributions was his eye gouge on Barça assistant Tito Vilanova in the aftermath of an August 2011 Super Cup defeat.
Mourinho has naturally mellowed with age and there will (probably) be no repeat of that kind of behaviour, but there’s no questioning how much he will want to win this match. He has plenty of history with Barcelona, having once worked there as an assistant and later been turned down for the manager’s role.
His presence will add an extra spice to the game, and while these meetings are less vindictive occasions these days, Mourinho will have no problem with resorting to some of the game’s darker arts if he believes they will help his team win. That will only add to the entertainment for the neutral.
It’s worth noting how good his record is against Barcelona despite the fact that his last spell at Madrid meant facing Messi, Xavi, Andrés Iniesta and Pep Guardiola.
When he left Madrid, he was on a five-game unbeaten streak in Clásicos in all competitions (W3 D2), so he could become only the club’s third manager ever to remain unbeaten in six consecutive games against Barcelona, after Miguel Muñoz between 1962 and 1965 (seven games, W7) and Vicente del Bosque between 2001 and 2003 (seven games, W2 D5).
It’s a stark contrast to the 5-0 defeat in his first match in this fixture, which remains Madrid’s heaviest league defeat this century. That result will have stung Mourinho badly and may even still hurt 15 years on. He’ll be desperate to get a result here.
But while a win would be monumental, a draw may be far more achievable…
Barça’s Home Form Contrasts With Madrid On the Road
Barcelona are a very, very good team, and they are very, very, very good at home.
They have four wins from four at home in the league this season, having won all 19 last term. That’s 23 consecutive home league wins and counting. If they win two more, they will be on the second-longest home winning streak in La Liga history.
The last time they failed to win at home in La Liga was a 3-2 defeat to Villarreal in May 2025, though that was really just a dead rubber after they’d already won the 2024-25 title.
The last time they failed to win at home in La Liga in a meaningful game was a 1-1 draw with Real Betis on 5 April 2025.
The last time they lost a meaningful game at home in La Liga was 21 December 2024 against Atlético Madrid. That’s an extraordinary run.
They score tonnes of goals wherever they play, but at home their record is particularly pronounced. In five games at the Camp Nou this season, Barcelona have scored 22 times.

Own goals are excluded
Madrid, meanwhile, haven’t had great results on the road this season, and have been rather unconvincing even when they have won.
Their away record in La Liga this season is played four, won two, lost two. And their two losses were their only two away games against teams that finished in the top five last season: Betis and Atlético. Barcelona away is an even bigger challenge.
And the wins, at Espanyol (16th in the table heading into the weekend) and Elche (18th), were both secured by 90th-minute winners from supersub Carlos Espí.
With two goals on the road, Espí is Madrid’s top scorer in away league games this season. He has as many as Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, Vinícius Júnior, Arda Güler and Yan Diomande combined. So many Madrid players have been underperforming in away games.
However, this Madrid side, like so many in recent history, often find ways to win against the odds. They have won three of their last six away La Liga games against Barcelona, which is as many as they had managed in their previous 16. They certainly shouldn’t be entirely written off.
Is This Where Barcelona’s Defence Starts to Unravel?
Barcelona have made an astonishing start to the season. Their two biggest stars have been in exceptional form.
Lamine Yamal has been directly involved in at least one goal in 10 consecutive Barcelona games in all competitions (10 goals, 10 assists). Raphinha is La Liga’s top scorer, with the third-highest goal tally after nine games (12) by any player this century, after Ronaldo in 2014-15 (16) and Messi in 2012-13 (13).

Victory on Sunday would make them the first team in La Liga history to win their first 10 matches of a season. They have scored 50 goals in just 12 games in all competitions, and won each of the first 11 of those.
But on Tuesday night, their winning run finally came to an end as they fell to a 4-2 defeat at Paris Saint-Germain. So, is this where their bubble bursts?

There’s enough evidence of Hansi Flick’s Barcelona being a brilliant team to assume that they will not allow this to develop into anything more than a one-game blip.
But there was also plenty of evidence of fallibility in the loss in Paris. They showed their attacking quality with two well-taken goals following breaks down the right, but had vulnerabilities exposed at the back as PSG created chances worth 3.7 xG. It might have been against the two-time reigning European champions – but the Madrid forwards may sense that chances will come their way on Sunday.
Madrid have defensive problems of their own, but they have scored four goals in each of their last three games, and their stacked forward line may be able to mask those deficiencies, as they have done many times already this season.
They may look to put pressure on the youngest members of Barça’s team. In Yamal, Marc Bernal, Xavi Espart and Pau Cubarsí, Barcelona had four teenagers start a Champions League match for the first time this week, and they lost. Flick may opt for a bit more experience on Sunday in order to try and avoid the possibility of their problems snowballing.
No Vinícius
With Vinícius Júnior and Mbappé in their team, it will probably come as no surprise that Madrid are the most left-heavy side in La Liga, taking by far the highest proportion of their attacking touches down that flank (45.3%).

So with Vini suspended for El Clásico following his red card for violent conduct in the win over Villarreal earlier this month, there may have been some concern that Madrid could struggle.
Any team is going to be weaker without a player like him, but the way they performed in the 4-1 win over Sevilla last week provides real reason for optimism.
They didn’t change how they played, with 50% of their attacking touches coming down the left even with Vinícius absent, and a whopping 66.7% of their chances being created from the left, too.
All three of their assists came from the left – their other goal was a penalty. The quality of those three goals was astounding, too.

Yan Diomande is a hell of a deputy. Against Sevilla, he became the first player under the age of 20 to score and provide an assist for Madrid in a league match in the 21st century (19 years and 338 days). Then, against RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday, he again set one goal up and scored another, this time after coming off the bench to replace Vinícius in the 70th minute.
Mbappé will be under even more pressure than usual to perform, but with a record of six goals in six matches against Barcelona since he joined Madrid, he’ll be confident he can do what is being asked of him. He is averaging a goal every 75 minutes in Clásicos.
Bellingham, meanwhile, has been involved in six goals in six Clásicos, scoring four and providing two assists. Three of his four goals were match-winners, meaning he holds the record for the most match-winning Madrid goals against Barcelona since the turn of the century.
Madrid have enough match-winners in reserve that they won’t feel Vinícius’ absence too keenly.
Should Madrid Defend Deep or Press High?
Barcelona play a very bold, very high back line. They have started their attacks, on average, further from their own goal (45.5 metres) than any other team in La Liga this season, while only Elche (36), who see far less of the ball than Barça, have caught their opponents offside more times (29).
That means there will be space in behind that Mbappé will certainly have his eye on, but he will have to be careful.
Two years ago, in a 4-0 defeat in Hansi Flick’s first Clásico, Mbappé struggled. He was caught offside eight times – the most by any player in a single match across the top five European leagues in almost 14 years.
Statistically speaking, he only half-learned his lesson in time for the same fixture the following season, when he was caught offside four times. However, Mbappé opened the scoring after springing the offside trap in the first half, and Madrid went on to win that game 2-1.
He would relish the opportunity to face a similarly high line again this weekend, and may well be happy for his side to allow Barça possession and territory in the hope of opening up more space in behind to exploit. With Mourinho in the dugout, the expectation is surely that this is how Madrid will set up.
However, PSG pressed Barça high from the off in midweek and they saw some results. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia hit the post after the ball had been won high up the pitch, and shortly after, they won the ball off Yamal in the Barça third before Désiré Doué opened the scoring.
In La Liga this season, meanwhile, only Levante (five) have conceded more goals following a high turnover than Barcelona (three). Clearly, it is possible to cause them issues by pushing up and putting pressure on their defenders during their build-up.

Madrid top La Liga this season for shot-ending high turnovers, with 19, but are they and Mourinho willing to take the risk of pushing up against a team like Barcelona? It’s a big decision, and could have huge consequences for how this game goes.
