Cooper Barkate 2027 NFL Draft Background
Barkate was a three-star recruit coming out of Mater Dei (California) and was the 32nd-ranked athlete in the Class of 2022. He committed to Harvard, where he played three seasons. Barkate redshirted the 2022 season, appearing in four games and finishing with 10 receptions for 157 yards for the Crimson. He started nine games in 2023, having 40 catches for 501 yards and three touchdowns, along with a rushing touchdown. His breakout campaign came in 2024, as he started all 10 games and hauled in 63 receptions for 1,084 yards and 11 touchdowns. Barkate saved his best game at Harvard for his last, catching eight passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns against arch-rival Yale.
Following three years with the Crimson, Barkate transferred to Duke. He proved his production in 2024 wasn’t just due to facing weaker competition, as he put up similar numbers playing in the Power Four. Barkate racked up 72 receptions for 1,106 yards and seven touchdowns across 14 games for the Blue Devils. His best showing came against Georgia Tech, in which he went for 172 yards on 13 catches. Barkate followed Mensah from Duke to Miami for the 2026 season. Through six games, he has 21 receptions for 269 yards and four touchdowns. Barkate’s best outing so far this season was against Clemson, where he had five catches, including a 61-yard touchdown.

Cooper Barkate 2027 NFL Draft Strengths
Barkate has reliable hands, having just seven drops on 139 targets since the start of 2025. His biggest strength as a player is his route running. He does an excellent job of finding the soft spots against zone coverage and sitting in open grass. Barkate is a smooth route runner who gets out of his breaks quickly. He stems his routes well to trick opposing defensive backs and is great at creating separation against man coverage. Barkate has proven production against various levels of competition, having back-to-back seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards.

Cooper Barkate 2027 NFL Draft Weaknesses
Barkate’s frame is on the lighter end for an NFL wide receiver, weighing 195 pounds. He may struggle against press coverage at the next level and need to play off the line of scrimmage. While his speed is adequate, Barkate isn’t a player who will consistently take the top off of defenses. He is average in contested-catch situations and after the catch.

The Last Word
The transfer portal has allowed players at smaller schools to prove themselves against top-end collegiate competition. Barkate has capitalized on this opportunity, being Mensah’s top pass catcher at Duke and a reliable second option at Miami. His combination of route running and consistent hands gives him a high floor at the next level. He doesn’t have elite traits, which gives his draft stock a ceiling, but he should translate to being a solid contributor in an NFL wide receiver room.
Barkate projects as a day-three selection, likely going in either the fourth or fifth round. He can improve his stock as Miami faces tougher opponents, starting with Notre Dame. If Barkate can step up against the Fighting Irish and in the College Football Playoff, he could play his way into day two of the 2027 NFL Draft.
