Vincent Kompany has been taken to hospital after an air ambulance landed at Bayern Munich's training ground on Friday. The 40-year-old has been battling a viral infection.

During last Saturday's 6-1 win against RB Leipzig, Kompany did give his team talk, but had to lie down on the sofa at the Allianz Arena both at half-time and after the game, according to BILD.

After a short break following the final whistle, the Belgian was analysing some of the match footage on his laptop but decided to leave the interviews to the sporting directors.

The infection is thought to have caused issues with old scar tissue, making it difficult for him to climb stairs.

Kompany was absent from training at Sabener Strasse on Monday, after doctors, including team physician Roland Schmidt, conducted a thorough examination of him.

The following day, he was unable to lead the final training session before the game against Arsenal, with assistant coach Aaron Danks replacing him at his pre-match press conference.

"The most important thing we are encouraging him to do right now is to rest and take the time he needs – however long that may take," Danks said.

On Wednesday, however, Kompany was back on the touchline against Arsenal. Speaking after the game, the former Manchester City captain said: "As a coach, you always want to do everything and accomplish everything.

"I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course I didn't listen to my body, and then at some point my body said: Stop now!"

But now, less than 48 hours later, Kompany's condition has worsened and he was taken to a Munich hospital by ambulance on Friday, after a helicopter landed at the training ground.

It has been a tough week Sabener Strasse, with a number of first-team players missing the Champions League game against Arsenal. Michael Olise sat out as a result of a one-match suspension for picking up two yellow cards in quick succession against Viking earlier this month, while Jamal Musiala was unavailable as he continues to recover from a thigh injury sustained during the late September international break.
