As per the latest news, Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya would “love to” play in Spain one day. Raya is 31 and has spent his entire professional career in England, but remains happy at Arsenal for now.
David Raya opens up on a future in Spain
As reported by ESPN, Raya spoke with Marca about the chance of returning to his home country. He left Spain in 2012 at 16 to join Blackburn, and all his senior football has come in England. Since then, he has moved on to Brentford and then Arsenal, becoming one of the Premier League’s leading goalkeepers. Asked about a return, he said he would “love to try out LaLiga” and called it a competitive league. He added that he is Spanish and could play for a club back home in the future.
His comments do not read as a transfer request, since his contract at Arsenal runs until June 2028. That deal gives Arsenal control over any future move, and Raya will be 32 when it ends. At that age, a LaLiga spell would be a natural next step after more than a decade in England.
Raya’s 2026/27 stats for Arsenal so far, as per FOTMOB:
Competition Matches Goals conceded Clean sheets Saves Save(%)
Premier League 7 5 4 15 75%
Champions League 2 0 2 3 100%
A career best season at Arsenal
David Raya is coming off the best season of his career, which brought a Premier League winner’s medal. Arsenal also made the finals of both the UCL and the Carabao Cup during that campaign. He won the Golden Glove for a third straight season, an award given for the most clean sheets. Arsenal conceded only 27 league goals in 38 games, which shows how well he and the defence worked together. The one disappointment was the World Cup, where Spain won the final but he did not play a minute.
Raya himself called last season a perfect year and said he has improved every year at Arsenal. He feels he played a decisive role in the league triumph and the run to the Champions League final. Arsenal won all eight league phase games in Europe, scoring 23 goals and conceding four. Arsenal, he added, want to establish themselves as the favourites and “win it all” this season. He also hopes to go one better in the Champions League, though there is a long way to go.

What next for Arsenal this season
Arsenal sit second in the Premier League, three points behind Manchester City, who have won all seven games. They opened the season with a 3-0 Community Shield win over City, and Raya kept a clean sheet. The Gunners have won their opening two Champions League games and travel to Bayern Munich on Wednesday night. Bayern have four points from two games, but Arsenal beat them 3-1 in last season’s league phase. Arsenal build from the back, so Raya must pick out passes calmly when sides press them hard.
His sweeping outside the box lets the defence hold a high line and squeeze the pitch. Those skills explain why a sale looks unlikely, as he has four clean sheets in seven league games. He has also saved 75 percent of the shots he has faced in the league this season. Arsenal host Everton on Saturday, and another solid display from him would help keep the pressure on Manchester City.
