Chelsea very keen on completing transfer of£116m Liverpool star–Xabi wants him at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea plotting Wirtz transfer from Liverpool

Chelsea could face a major transfer decision if an opportunity emerges to reunite Xabi Alonso with one of his former Bayer Leverkusen stars, although Liverpool currently show no indication of accepting an offer.

Alonso took charge at Stamford Bridge in summer 2026 and has started shaping Chelsea around possession, positional discipline and quick combinations between the midfield and attack. The club spent heavily during the summer, including £117 million on Morgan Rogers, while Cole Palmer remains central to their attacking plans.

However, Chelsea’s recruitment team continues to assess potential additions who could improve the side’s creativity against organised defences. That search has reportedly brought a familiar name into the discussion.

According to TeamTalk, in a report highlighted by Anfield Index, Chelsea are monitoring Florian Wirtz ahead of a possible future move. The report describes preliminary interest rather than formal negotiations, and Liverpool have not indicated that they intend to sell the German international.

Florian Wirtz Transfer News: Why Chelsea are watching Wirtz

The 23-year-old joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in 2025 for a reported £116 million, carrying considerable expectations after his outstanding performances under Alonso in Germany. Their previous working relationship offers Chelsea an obvious reason to examine whether the attacking midfielder could thrive again under the Spaniard.

Wirtz has produced mixed results during his Liverpool spell, although his creative output still gives the club reasons to persist with him. In the 2026/27 Premier League campaign, he has recorded two assists in seven appearances, played 560 minutes, created 19 chances and completed 83 per cent of his passes.

His Champions League figures offer further encouragement. Across three appearances, he has scored once, provided one assist and created eight chances, completing 90 per cent of his passes. Those numbers suggest that his influence extends beyond his domestic goal return.

Liverpool, however, retain control of the situation. Wirtz has a contract until 2030, and Chelsea would probably need a substantial financial commitment to persuade the Merseyside club to consider negotiations.

Would Wirtz solve a genuine problem for Chelsea?

A reunion could make tactical sense, but Chelsea must separate an attractive idea from an essential signing.

Alonso knows how to use Wirtz between the lines, where his close control, quick passing and ability to turn under pressure can unsettle compact defences. Pairing him with Palmer could give Chelsea two creative players who exchange positions and open passing lanes for João Pedro.

Yet the financial question deserves equal attention. Chelsea already invested £117 million in Rogers, while Palmer remains a key attacking figure. Paying another enormous fee for Wirtz would demand careful planning around wages, squad balance and future recruitment.

Liverpool’s current position offers Chelsea little encouragement, so the Blues should avoid treating a reunion as an attainable deal before meaningful negotiations begin. If Wirtz eventually becomes available, Alonso’s experience with him would strengthen Chelsea’s case. Until then, the club must decide whether another elite creator offers better value than reinforcing other areas of the squad.
