Speaking to reporters on Friday ahead of the Knicks' face-off against their former center, Brunson made it clear that he understands the competitor mindset in Robinson.
"We know Mitch is a competitor. He’s a person who wears his emotions on his sleeve … that’s just Mitch being Mitch," Brunson said.
"It’s definitely bittersweet … he’s a good friend. I’m just happy he was able to get a nice payday."
Mitchell Robinson skips Knicks ring and banner ceremony
Mitchell Robinson previously claimed that he had no plans to watch the New York Knicks accept their rings and raise their 2026 NBA championship banner last Tuesday.
After helping the Knicks win it all last year, Robinson signed a three-year, $47.4 million fully guaranteed contract with the Boston Celtics in July.
As Jalen Brunson and the Knicks traveled to Boston to face the Celtics, Robinson will still need to wait until March 14 to get his championship ring, as he will head back to Madison Square Garden for the first time since leaving New York.
For now, Robinson will focus on helping the Celtics beat his former team on Friday.
