PORTSMOUTH, OHIO (WSAZ) -Portsmouth Notre Dame played its last game at Spartan Municipal Stadium, closing a historic chapter at a field that once hosted the Portsmouth Spartans before they became the Detroit Lions in 1934.
For generations, families have played on the field while former players and lifelong fans filled the stands, including Mary Saltsman who says she’s attended games there since she was 6 years old, later cheering on the same field as a Notre Dame cheerleader.
Shawnee State University recently purchased the stadium and plans a massive renovation so its Division II program can play there. Notre Dame will still be able to play its home games at the stadium.
Athletic leaders say they’re excited about the stadium’s future.
