The San Antonio Spurs have suffered their second straight home loss to open the season.
In a down-to-the-wire game on Friday night against the Houston Rockets, they suffered a 114-110 defeat.
Wembanyama denied on decisive final possession
On the final possession of the game, Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama had a chance to tie the score, but Amen Thompson rose up to block him in the closing seconds in one of the top defensive plays of the season so far.
After the game, Wembanyama opened up about the decisive play, stating that if he could replay the moment, he would have dunked the ball. He also noted that the Spurs must avoid falling behind by double digits, expressing confidence that they will respond in their next game.
"Yes," Wemby told the media when asked if he would have done anything differently on the final possession. "I would have dunked the ball."
Wembanyama identifies Spurs' biggest problem
"We showed a better face," Wemby said, reflecting on the team's response after their previous loss to the Thunder. "We need to stop getting down double digits. And we made some mistakes that were very costly. This is our problem."
"We work hard for a time, and then we blow away what we have. But it was better."
Wembanyama is confident the team will bounce back in their next matchup against the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday.
"We will show our message on the court," he stated.
So far, Victor Wembanyama hasn't found his rhythm yet, averaging 18.5 points, 13 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 4 blocks while shooting just 29.4% from the field and 20% from three-point range through two games.
Against the Rockets, he finished with 25 points, 13 rebounds, and 2 blocks, shooting 9/21 (42.9%) from the field and 2/6 (33.3%) from beyond the arc.
