Seahawks Cut Trevon Diggs Just Weeks After First Release 1

The Seattle Seahawks (3-3) face the unbeaten Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night after a 17-14 overtime loss at Denver. Before kickoff, a Friday roster move involving veteran cornerback Trevon Diggs has added another storyline to the week. It was not the first time Seattle made that decision with him. The reason behind it says a lot about the team’s depth.

Seahawks cut Trevon Diggs before Chiefs game

Seattle released Diggs from the 53-man roster on Friday, October 23. The move cleared space for guard Anthony Bradford, who returns from injured reserve and has no injury designation for Sunday’s game.

It was the second time this season that Seattle made this call. The Seahawks cut Diggs on August 30 when they set their opening roster, then brought him back to the practice squad and later to the active roster.

Seattle re-signed Diggs to the practice squad the same day, and as a vested veteran he did not have to clear waivers.

Playing time was scarce. Starting corners Devon Witherspoon and Josh Jobe have each stayed on the field for nearly every defensive snap, and Diggs recorded one tackle in three games. His best known moment came in Week 5, when 49ers receiver Mike Evans turned his shoulder to check the name on his jersey.

Diggs once looked like a star, with 11 interceptions in 2021 and a $97 million extension from Dallas. Injuries and exits from Dallas and Green Bay followed, and he sat unsigned for months before Seattle gave him a one-year deal in August.

Within days of signing, Diggs gave the Seahawks a preview of his return to form.

Trevon Diggs made an early mark against Chiefs in preseason

Kansas City Chiefs has already seen Diggs at his best this season. In the preseason finale on August 28, he made his first appearance as a Seahawk and intercepted rookie quarterback Garrett Nussmeier in the first quarter at Arrowhead Stadium.

The pass was meant for Xavier Worthy, and Diggs caught it at the Seattle 14 to end a promising Chiefs drive.

He had practiced only twice with the team before playing three defensive series. His interception was Seattle’s only takeaway of the night, and the defense kept the Chiefs out of the end zone in a 9-9 tie.

His regular season debut came on October 4, when he was elevated from the practice squad and played nine defensive snaps in a 30-23 win over the Chargers.

The Seahawks (3-3) host the Chiefs (5-0) at Lumen Field on Sunday at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC. Seattle looks to snap a two-game losing streak, while Kansas City aims to stay unbeaten. Diggs remains with the team as practice squad depth.
