Shrader discusses tying the Colts franchise record with five field goals, coming back from a torn ACL and MCL, and hitting a game-winner against the Texans.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) - Former Notre Dame kicker and current Indianapolis Colts kicker Spencer Shrader caught up with 16 Sports reporter Isaiah Dunn for the latest edition of “That’s How It’s Dunn.”
Shrader talked about tying the Colts franchise record with five field goals in a game, coming back from a torn ACL and MCL in his right leg last year, and what goes through his mind before a game-winning kick.
Staying hot
Shrader has been on a tear to start the season, including a five-field-goal performance to tie the franchise record.
He said it all comes back to staying process-oriented, especially after struggling in training camp while coming back from injury.
“It started back in training camp when I was struggling coming back from injury. And you just have to keep your head down and grind and get through those moments as best you can,” Shrader said. “And then we’ve gotten off to a hot start, but now it’s about sustaining that game by game, week by week.”
Coming back from injury
Last year, Shrader tore the ACL and MCL in his right leg. Looking back now, he said the key was focusing on the next step in front of him.
“How do I get healthy? How do I walk, let alone start kicking again?” Shrader said. “And I had great resources around me that helped me stay on that task and just focused on getting better one step at a time.”
That game-winner vs. the Texans
Shrader has already hit game-winners this season, including one against the Houston Texans.
When asked what goes through his mind with the game on the line, he said the answer is simpler than people think.
“I treat it like it’s just another kick,” Shrader said. “The hard part is, game winner, stadium’s got this buzz about it. You know, the situations are a little bit different because normally you’re in like this two minute drill.”
“So you can just, you know, the sideline feels different, but what I’m doing is I’m just focusing on my routine and trying to not let any of that get into my head.”
