Russo inspires Arsenal Women to comeback win at Spurs to end WSL winless run

Arsenal Women came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the Women’s Super League at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The victory ended the Gunners’ five-game winless run in the WSL and moved them to within one point of Spurs.

Arsenal started brightly as they registered the game’s first attempt. Georgia Stanway played a one-two with Alessia Russo before firing straight at goalkeeper Lize Kop.

However, Cathinka Tandberg put Spurs ahead in the 13th minute, rising highest to head Victoria Pelova’s corner into the net.

Arsenal quickly found a response as Russo picked out Stanway, who unleashed a powerful shot that went in off the crossbar and beyond Kop.

Neither side created many clear-cut chances before the interval.

Renee Slegers’ side upped the ante at the start of the second half. They almost went ahead when Russo drilled a first-time effort towards goal, but Kop kept her effort out.

The England international eventually beat the Spurs goalkeeper from the penalty spot, sending her the wrong way to give Arsenal the lead in the 56th minute.

Russo almost extended the Gunners’ lead when she met Leah Williamson’s cross with a powerful effort, but this time Kop was equal to the task.

Misa Rodriguez in the Arsenal goal made a good save to deny Shekiera Martinez, although the Tottenham forward was subsequently flagged offside.

Caitlin Foord then fired wide in the closing stages as Arsenal held on to secure all three points.

Slegers’ side will be aiming to make it back-to-back victories when they host Portuguese side Benfica in the UEFA Women’s Champions League on Wednesday.
