Liverpool have long been drawn to young players who are well ahead of schedule, and one of the most exciting teenagers in world football may be about to become available again.

According to Spanish outlet SPORT, Liverpool are among a group of Europe’s biggest clubs who have tracked the midfielder since he broke through in the United States.

Real Madrid, Barcelona, Chelsea and Paris Saint Germain are also on the list, but Manchester City moved first, reaching a pre-agreement with the player’s representatives through the City Football Group that would take him to the Etihad once he turns 18.

That deal now looks less certain than it did.

City were reportedly found guilty of 114 of the 115 financial charges brought by the Premier League, and the sanctions have not been announced yet.

SPORT suggests relegation remains a possibility, and it also points to a potential “star exodus” if City drop into the Championship, with the teenager named alongside Erling Haaland, Josko Gvardiol, Jeremy Doku and Antoine Semenyo.

Cavan Sullivan turned 17 at the end of September and already holds a remarkable list of records.

He became the youngest player ever to debut in MLS, and in North American professional sport, at 14 years and 293 days.

This season he set the MLS record for goal involvements by a teenager in a single campaign, with seven goals and 14 assists and he also put together a ten game run with at least one goal involvement in each, the longest ever by a player under 20 in the league.

He became the youngest MLS Player of the Month in the award’s history when he won it for September at 17 years and two days old, then topped the league’s 22 Under 22 list to beat the record Alphonso Davies set in 2018, and his international career has started just as quickly.

Sullivan made his United States debut in September and scored in a 3–0 win over Mexico, becoming the youngest goalscorer in the national team’s history.

Whether Liverpool can turn that interest into something more serious is another matter, as Sullivan’s camp has pushed back on suggestions the City deal is in danger, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that the agency dismissed as fabricated a Spanish interview in which the agent was quoted as saying “you never know what might happen” and insisted Sullivan has no plans other than joining City.

Even so, Liverpool’s recruitment team has never been shy about acting when a situation changes.

If City’s punishment proves severe, the race for Sullivan could open up quickly, and Anfield would surely be one of the destinations worth watching.
