Cam Skattebo Announces The Giants May Release Him - Details 1

Cam Skattebo knows his spot with the New York Giants is not guaranteed.

The rookie running back has experienced a difficult stretch over the past week, going from a key part of the team’s plans to barely seeing the field in a Week 6 loss to the New Orleans Saints. Now, following the Giants’ decision to release fellow running back Najee Harris, Skattebo understands just how quickly things can change in the NFL.

Cam Skattebo Knows He Isn’t Safe With The Giants

Speaking with reporters Friday, Skattebo acknowledged that the move was a reminder to every player in the locker room that their jobs are never guaranteed.

“Nobody is safe, that’s as simple as that,” Skattebo said. “When we go on the field, and we go perform, if we’re not performing, we understand there’s a possibility of not being here.”

He also made it clear that he knows the same standard applies to him.

“If I don’t perform, I know there’s a possibility of me not being here,” Skattebo added.

Those comments come after a frustrating Week 6 for the young running back. Skattebo was benched after a costly overtime fumble against the Washington Commanders, marking his fourth fumble in five games. The mistake had immediate consequences, as he played just six snaps and did not receive a single touch in the Giants’ loss to New Orleans.

It was a surprising turn for a player who had been viewed as an important piece of the team’s future alongside quarterback Jaxson Dart. While his role has come into question, the Giants’ latest roster move could give him an opportunity to get back on track.

New York released Harris earlier this week, just days after the veteran publicly expressed frustration with his limited role. Head coach John Harbaugh explained Friday that the decision came down to the team’s roster numbers.

“It’s hard to carry four backs,” Harbaugh said.

With Harris gone, the Giants’ running back group now consists of Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary. Harbaugh has indicated that he expects Skattebo to have a bigger role, giving the young back an opportunity to respond after his recent struggles.

Skattebo has already seen how quickly his standing can change after a costly mistake. His comments suggest he understands that the best way to secure his future is to produce when his number is called.

The Giants’ decision to move on from Harris may have opened the door for Skattebo to get more opportunities. Whether he can take advantage of them could go a long way toward determining his role for the rest of the season.
