At least 12 people, including children as young as 11, have been injured at a mass shooting at an American football match.

Gunmen opened fire outside the university football game in Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday evening. An “altercation” occurred between “two or three” people as crowds streamed out of Florida A&M University's Bragg Memorial Stadium.

Police said three people were seriously injured, with one in a critical condition, and eight people who were hurt are now stable. Six children, one as young as 11, were injured — along with a grandmother.

Witnesses describe fleeing the chaos as fans escaped from the scene in a panic. In clips shared on social media, one person can be heard explaining “everybody ran; everybody cleared off”. Video shows the area outside the stadium is strewn with belongings of the bystanders, reports the Daily Mail .

No arrests have been made, Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said.

He added in a press conference: “I stand before you tonight devastated… We had officers who were picking up victims and carrying them in their arms to transport because they couldn't get through the mass of people.

"We do not know exactly what happened … what we do believe is that this was an isolated incident between two or three individuals.”

The Florida A&M ‘Rattlers’ were hosting their homecoming football match against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, an event which usually draws in big crowds to the 19,000-capacity stadium.
