Midfielders who cover large distances and contribute at both ends of the pitch are often managed carefully once the season reaches its busiest period. A substitution in the closing stages can appear routine until footage shows the player reaching for a muscle and moving more carefully than usual. Those moments tend to prompt closer scrutiny from supporters when the side is already dealing with several other absences.

The centre of the pitch has been one of the more consistent areas of the team this season, with depth available on the bench. Any fresh concern involving a regular starter would still require careful assessment before the next fixture. At the same time, recruitment staff continue to monitor young forwards who have made an immediate impact at other Premier League clubs.

Arsenal closed the gap on Manchester City at the top of the table with a 2-0 win over Everton at the Emirates. Declan Rice started in midfield alongside Mikel Merino and was replaced by Martin Zubimendi with around ten minutes of normal time remaining

Footage showed the England international reaching for his hamstring and squatting on the pitch before walking gingerly in the moments before the change.

Declan Rice sparked concern among supporters with his body language during Saturday’s win over the Toffees. While some thought it was a routine switch, moments before, some spotted Rice reaching for his hamstring and squatting on the pitch before walking gingerly in the aftermath.

Declan Rice should have been rested today imo. We’ve got Zubi and Bruno G to give this guy some bit of rest ffs.

He was seen holding his hamstring before being substituted. I hope it’s nothing serious. https://t.co/D4Zoo5RowJ

While Arteta has a wealth of depth in central midfield, with the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Max Dowman filling his bench for the Everton match, Rice’s presence would certainly be missed should he face a period on the sidelines.

The 27-year-old covers the ground like no other, is strong in the tackle, has brilliant vision and distribution and also provides an attacking threat from both open play and set pieces. As a result, fans will hope that it was just a case of fatigue for Rice, as opposed to a muscular issue.

The manager has not yet confirmed any diagnosis, and further checks will be required once the medical staff have assessed the player.

Arsenal’s immediate priority remains assessing Rice’s condition ahead of the next match, with the depth in midfield providing options if he requires a period of rest. The club will continue to monitor developments on both fronts in the coming days.
