What Manchester City and Enzo Maresca Can Learn From Disappointing Aston Villa Trip
Nicolas Jackson’s ruthless brace shattered Manchester City’s perfect start to the Premier League season as Aston Villa claimed a fourth successive win over the Citizens at Villa Park on Saturday.
Enzo Maresca's side arrived at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon with an impressive winning streak of seven league games.
Manchester City knew they were in for a challenge though with the home side not only doing the double over them last season but also winning this fixture in the last three campaigns.
Villa started brightly as predicted and soon raced into an early lead through Nicolas Jackson's upward strike, gifted by Marc Guehi's poor first touch.
City rallied and went close to an equaliser, with Iliman Ndiaye looking lively with several attempts, striking the post in the process.
Going into the break trailing, the Citizens came out swinging and soon found themselves level through Erling Haaland's header.
Despite this reinvigoration, Villa soon retook the lead through Jackson again with an effort that Gianluigi Donnarumma really should have done better with.
City struggled to find that spark again after falling behind for a second time and, despite pressure, succumbed to defeat.
Here are five things Maresca and co will take away from Manchester City's first Premier League loss of the season.
1. 100% record over
Manchester City's start to the 2026/27 season has been nothing short of wonderous, racking up an impressive 10 wins already.
However, this was always likely to hit a severe bump in the road at one stage or another, and the all-too-familiar challenge of Aston Villa proved enough to derail the momentum.
Even with a healthy amount of wins in the bag arriving at Villa Park, there is no denying there have been shaky moments this season which went unpunished.
From a nervous start to the game against Liverpool to being on the ropes against Bournemouth on day one, City have got away with a few this campaign already.
Sadly for Enzo Maresca, this luck ran out on Saturday and a spritely Villa side got the better of the sky blues, handing out a first defeat in the Premier League.
2. Guehi disasterclass
There were many on the pitch for Manchester City on Saturday afternoon who were far from their best, but arguably none more so than Marc Guehi.
Despite being a powerhouse of a defender who has largely looked top class since his January move from Crystal Palace, he has been prone to the odd mistake.
The latest of these came against Aston Villa, with a heavy first touch then opening up the defence for his opponents to take the lead.
Guehi being then beaten for pace lead to a free-kick being given away at the edge of the box which could have easily seen the Villans double their advantage.
The defender's shaky 45 minutes saw him deservedly hooked by Enzo Maresca at half-time, but the real worry for City is how often these mistakes are starting to crop up.
3. Villa Park curse
This is the fourth successive season in which Manchester City have fallen to a dismal defeat at Villa Park.
On top of that, its the third consecutive game that the side has lost to Aston Villa, with the Birmingham side doing the double last campaign for the first time in over 60 years.
Of course, there is always a strong atmosphere at Villa Park, but there is more to City's losing run than a few fan chants.
Whether it is a mental block for the players or just bad luck and poor decisions from season to season, this fixture is fast becoming a damaging pitfall for the club.
Times have improved in recent years at City's previous cursed ground Anfield, but Villa Park is ominously taking on that mantle as a graveyard for the Citizens.
4. Sloppy Anderson
As much as Marc Guehi will be berated for Saturday's loss to Aston Villa, criticism must also be given to one of his international teammates.
Since joining Manchester City in the summer from Nottingham Forest, Elliot Anderson has rarely put a foot wrong.
Running the midfield, the England player has controlled games and often been named as the man of the match.
However, whether it be fatigue or another issue, the Anderson on display versus Aston Villa was a shadow of the one we have seen for the majority of this campaign.
Much like his first half against Paris Saint-Germain, the midfielder was sloppy with passes gone awry and attacks ruined attacks by over hitting crosses.
There is no doubting what a world-class asset Anderson is, and his Villa Park performance is likely just a blip, but it does highlight just how important his good work is to the team.
5. Haaland's keeps scoring
There were few positives to take from Manchester City's maiden Premier League loss of the 2026/27 season.
Among the slim pickings is that Erling Haaland's wonderful scoring run has continued, with the striker now having 13 goals in ten games in total.
This form has seen him notch in nine consecutive games in all competitions and seven in the Premier League.
Chances were few and far between for Haaland on Saturday afternoon, but when the first of the game fell to him in the second half, he characteristically made no mistake.
The result, of course, didn't go the way of City, but some solace can be taken in the fact that the Norwegians' goalfest didn't also come to a halt, as the team's winning run did.
Haaland will need to maintain this prolific showing in front of goal if City are to get back to winning ways and mount a serious challenge on all fronts this year.
