Cole Palmer has posted a 12-word apology after the Chelsea star was sent off in the 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur.

‌

‌

Palmer had already received a yellow card for barging into Mateus Fernandes when he received his marching orders by referee Chris Kavanagh for catching Conor Gallagher late with 10 minutes left. It means the 24-year-old will miss the Carabao Cup clash with Liverpool on Wednesday.

‌

Taking to Instagram on Sunday, Palmer issued an apology. He said: "Not good enough by me. Live n learn! Apologies. Onto the next."

‌

Tottenham recorded only their second win over Chelsea in the Premier League era on Saturday thanks to a Mike Penders own-goal and a sensational solo effort by Mathys Tel. Roberto De Zerbi’s team arrived in west London with a torrid record at rivals Chelsea after only one triumph from their last 41 visits to SW6, but turned history on its head with a dominant display in a 2-0 win against Xabi Alonso’s 10 men.

Alonso was asked after the game if the sending off was a lesson to be learnt. The Spaniard said: "Yeah, absolutely, I haven't seen them on TV but as far as I have been told that probably he got it right, so for sure for Cole but for everyone.

‌

"We think [up until] now we haven't received any red card and we need to continue that way because we need to have this maturity to deal with difficult moments, when you have conceded 1-0, still probably was 15-20 minutes to go, so we have to be on the way. I need to check the action to talk with Cole but it is one to learn for the future for sure."

On the defeat, Alonso added: "Well, about the game, for sure we are disappointed with the result, with the performance. Half time we have spoken, I had the feeling that it was going to be about the first goal, the second half it was being tight, some half chances from them, some half chances from us, it was going to be about the key moment and once we have conceded the first goal it has changed everything.

"Straight away almost when we wanted to have a reaction, the red card and it went the other way and probably we can do better, so it is one to reflect in this big game that it was and it is a good opponent, the performance is one to improve."
