Liverpool Vice-Chairman, Amit Bhatia
Liverpool’s new vice-chairman Amit Bhatia could play an important role in shaping the club’s future after becoming part of the group that secured a significant stake in the Premier League side earlier this year.
Bhatia’s arrival is an interesting development for Liverpool, with the businessman bringing experience from the world of investment and property alongside the financial backing of a wealthy ownership group.
The Reds have already established themselves as one of football’s biggest clubs, but having people with strong business backgrounds involved at boardroom level could help them continue to grow off the pitch.
That could prove particularly important as Liverpool look to remain competitive in the increasingly expensive world of football, where clubs need to keep the books balanced to avoid running into trouble.
According to The Times, Bhatia has now secured a €29 million investment for Summix Capital, the property development company he co-founded.
The businessman was part of the 1892 consortium, which also included Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin.
The group acquired a 38% stake in Liverpool this summer, with the deal reportedly valuing the club at around £5 billion.
However, Bhatia’s latest business development is focused on Ireland, where Summix Capital has been involved in several major property projects.
The company backed the construction of the Bonham Quay office development in Galway, which was developed by Gerry Barrett.
It is also behind a major regeneration scheme at Augustine Hill in the same city.
The ambitious project is expected to cover eight acres, including six residential buildings, highlighting the scale of Summix’s plans in the country.
Its work has also extended to student accommodation, with developments completed on Queen Street in Galway and Washington Street in Cork.
In Dublin, the company is redeveloping the former Independent Newspaper offices on Abbey Street for the same purpose.
Summix is also working on a masterplan for land in Kilcullen, County Kildare, as it continues to expand its property interests.
The €29 million investment from the Ireland Strategic Investment Fund is a significant development for the business.
Amit Bhatia’s growing investment portfolio will be worth keeping an eye on.
While his property ventures are separate from his role at Anfield, his experience in securing funding and managing large-scale projects could prove valuable as Liverpool look to strengthen their position both financially and commercially.
