Manchester City Loanee Claudio Echeverri Open to Extended Benfica Stay
Manchester City youngster Claudio Echeverri would be open to extending his stay with Benfica beyond his initial loan agreement as he searches for consistent minutes, according to new reports.
Claudio Echeverri's rise from River Plate reserves to one of South America's most talked-about exports was widely expected to lead straight to European stardom. His career since crossing the Atlantic, however, has been anything but straightforward.
Two years on from his arrival at the Etihad Stadium, the 20-year-old finds himself at a crossroads in his young career, searching for the stability that has so far eluded him across loan spells in Germany, Spain and now Portugal.
Having struggled to pin down starting roles in two different leagues last season, the Argentine international is determined to make his newest opportunity at a continental club count.
Echeverri reflects on Argentine tradition at Benfica
Speaking in an interview with Portuguese outlet Mais Futebol, in comments relayed by Sport Witness, Echeverri opened up on his feelings about life in Lisbon.
Having been billed as one of the planet’s most exciting young talents following his initial move to Manchester City in 2024, the Argentine did not manage to get a foothold at either Bayer Leverkusen or Girona.
Despite a similarly modest opening phase to his campaign under Marco Silva, the midfielder is keen to follow the well-trodden path of the many iconic compatriots who have thrived at the Estádio da Luz - including Premier League winner Nicolas Otamendi, current Manchester City star Enzo Fernandez and winger Angel Di Maria.
"In Europe, Benfica is one of the best clubs for welcoming Argentines," Echeverri said. "Many great Argentine players have come through here.
"I hope that [Gianluca] Prestianni and I can follow in the footsteps of those Argentines who found success here. I'm very happy to be here."
Open to longer stay as development continues under Marco Silva
While his early months in Portugal have seen him restricted primarily to substitute roles and limited minutes - he made his first start for the club in the mid-October win over Cypriot side Omonia Nicosia - that doesn’t mean Echeverri is not open to extending his stay in Marco Silva’s squad.
“Yes, of course [I could stay longer at Benfica]. But one step at a time - we’ll see what happens. Still, it would be wonderful," the playmaker added.
The chance to play regular competitive football in European competition, of course, remains a key objective for both the player and his parent club.
It seems unlikely that either party would be willing to let another full season pass without Echeverri finding regular minutes.
With weekend domestic action now in the rear-view mirror following a first league defeat of the season against Aston Villa, focus at the Etihad Stadium turns to a cup-and-league double-header against Brighton and Hove Albion.
Had Echeverri remained at Manchester City, he would surely be in contention for minutes in the midweek match - meaning he will want to start seeing more of the pitch in Portugal soon if the loan is to prove a worthwhile exercise.
