Cole Palmer's poor record against big six exposed as Chelsea star called out

Cole Palmer reacts during Chelsea's 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League

Cole Palmer's pretty dreadful record against the so-called 'big six' has come to light after his red card in Chelsea's 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs sealed just their second Premier League win at Stamford Bridge on Saturday as a Mike Penders own goal and Mathys Tel won the game for Roberto De Zerbi's men.

3Palmer's red card ended a poor game for the England international

Palmer received two yellow cards to be sent off, with the first one for an off-the-ball incident against Matheus Fernandes.

He was then late to a tackle with Conor Gallagher and picked up the second booking.

It also was another game in which he failed to score or assist against a fellow big six side.

And if you take away penalties, his end product in those matches has been very poor.

In 25 games, he has two non-penalty goals, and they are both against Manchester United.

Poor example

Despite his age, Palmer is one of the most experienced players in the team.

And talkSPORT presenter Max Scott feels Palmer should have been sent off for his first yellow card.

After a series of late tackles, including one by Fernandes on the England international, he reacted badly and charged at the Tottenham midfielder, who was on the floor.

He connected with his head and sparked a brawl, but the attacking midfielder was only booked.

On that incident, Scott said: "Cole Palmer was lucky not to be sent off for that yellow card he got on Matheus Fernandes.

"He's a lucky boy that he wasn't sent off earlier in that game because that is a naughty charge towards Fernandes, who is on the floor.

"Last week, [Yehor] Yarmoliuk was sent off for Brentford for a silly nudge with the head, but VAR should have looked at the Palmer incident because he's charged towards a player on the floor and chested him in the head.

"So, if it is about aggressive, violent conduct, then that was more of a red card than Yarmoliuk last week.

"Palmer needs to take a look at himself because he might be an absolutely wonderful player, but there are bubbling concerns about the attitude.

"He's let Chelsea down in a fixture you expect them to win, so it will be interesting to see how he bounces back."

Discipline issues

That was Palmer's first red card of his club career, though he can be prone to picking up yellows.

The 24-year-old looked stunned when he was sent off, but Scott isn't the only one who believes that Palmer was lucky not to be shown a straight red.

Speaking on Weekend Sports Breakfast, Katie Shanahan said: "I thought he should have had a red card for that first one where he had a yellow.

"But what was he doing? He is one of the best players in the team, arguably the best.

"Surely, he should be showing signs of leadership, maturity - this is not good, and he can't be doing it going forward because it costs the team."

And former Premier League striker Tony Cascarino believes that the versatile forward is prone to a few silly moments that can cost his team.

"I don't know him personally, but I don't consider him a leader. He is a performance player that wants the ball and can make things happen when he just plays his game.

"He is never captain material with the way he talks and plays the game.

"When he doesn't get his own way, he will start doing daft things, and he does.

"Palmer can lift players with a moment. He is capable of incredible moments, but if games are not going his way, he is going to do something petulant, and he's done it more than once."

Palmer will serve his suspension in the Carabao Cup fourth round match with Liverpool on Wednesday.

He will then be available for the Premier League clash with Man United at Stamford Bridge next Saturday.
