Liverpool are finally showing what they can do in the Premier League under Andoni Iraola, with the Reds heading into half-time 2-0 up against Brighton at Anfield.
Goals from Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak have given Liverpool a fantastic start in a game they desperately needed to win. After struggling to turn their attacking quality into league goals, this is exactly the sort of response supporters wanted to see.
And the best part? Both goals have come from the kind of attacking quality that Liverpool have been waiting to see more consistently.
Wirtz breaks the deadlock
Liverpool took the lead in the 17th minute through Florian Wirtz, whose effort found the back of the net after a move involving Ronald Araújo.
It was a huge moment for the German, who has been searching for greater influence in the Premier League. His creativity has never been in doubt, but Liverpool need him to turn that ability into goals and decisive contributions.
This was a welcome reminder of what he can bring.
Anfield needed something to celebrate, and Wirtz delivered. Hopefully, this can be the start of a much more productive run for a player with so much talent.
Isak doubles Liverpool’s advantage
Just four minutes later, Liverpool struck again.
Alexander Isak made it 2-0 in the 21st minute, finishing from close range after Bradley Barcola capitalised on a Brighton defensive error and provided the assist.
That is precisely what Liverpool want from their attacking players: quick reactions, direct running and ruthless finishing.
Isak has the quality to be a major player for Liverpool, but he needs opportunities in dangerous areas. This time, he made no mistake.
Barcola deserves credit for his part in the goal, too. His ability to attack space and put defenders under pressure can be a real weapon for Iraola’s side.
Two goals in four minutes have put Liverpool firmly in control.
Liverpool finally finding their attacking rhythm?
Before kick-off, one of the biggest talking points was Liverpool’s disappointing Premier League scoring record compared with their performances in Europe.
They had scored freely in the Champions League and Carabao Cup, but the same attacking fluency had been missing in the league.
That makes this first half particularly encouraging.
Wirtz and Isak have both found the net, while Barcola has contributed directly to the second goal. Liverpool are showing the quality and sharpness that their supporters have been waiting to see.
There is still work to do, of course. Brighton are a dangerous side, and a two-goal lead can disappear quickly if Liverpool lose their concentration.
The Reds must not allow complacency to creep in.
One more half to finish the job
Iraola could hardly have asked for a better start to the afternoon.
Liverpool have the two-goal advantage, their attacking players are making an impact, and Anfield has every reason to believe that the long wait for a Premier League home win under the new manager could finally be over.
But the job is only half done.
Liverpool need to keep their shape, remain aggressive when opportunities arise and avoid giving Brighton a route back into the game.
If they can maintain this level of performance, there is every reason to be optimistic.
Half-time: Liverpool 2-0 Brighton.
Wirtz has delivered, Isak has scored, and Liverpool are in a strong position. Now let’s see the Reds finish the job and give Anfield the Premier League victory it has been waiting for.W
