Liverpool finally ended their wait for a first Premier League home victory under Andoni Iraola on Sunday afternoon, beating Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 at Anfield.
The Reds went into the game looking to build on their impressive run, but faced a Brighton side who had been in excellent form.
The Seagulls had won their previous four league matches without conceding a goal, making them a difficult opponent for Liverpool.
However, Liverpool made a brilliant start and took control of the contest with two goals in the opening 30 minutes.
Florian Wirtz’s strike came in the 16th minute but was eventually credited as a Pascal Gross own goal, before Alexander Isak doubled the advantage just four minutes later.
Brighton had plenty of work to do after falling behind so early, but Liverpool battled hard for the remainder of the game to cling on to a brilliant victory.
The result also continued the Reds’ growing sense of positivity, having only fallen at the hands of Manchester City under Andoni Iraola so far.
The Iraola era is now well underway on Merseyside, but one thing had continued to evade the Liverpool head coach and that was a Premier League home victory.
Liverpool had produced some encouraging performances at Anfield, including wins in Europe, but had been unable to turn that form into three points in the league.
That unwanted wait is now over, with Liverpool showing both their attacking quality and defensive determination to get past a dangerous Brighton team.
Reflecting after the game, Andoni Iraola said: “It feels good and we have to keep going. I am liking a lot of things I am seeing on the pitch. Some of the players had better performances, but it is a team you can trust.”
“We needed this win at home to celebrate it with the supporters. We had a really good performance from the players. We started really aggressively, and we needed this start. We were very focused on starting well and scoring the first goal.”
It was a hard-fought victory against opponents who had been scoring freely in recent weeks, and one that could prove important as Iraola continues to build his side.
The Liverpool boss will now hope his players can use the result as a platform for further progress, with confidence growing after another positive result.
