Footage that appears to show a midfielder reaching for the back of his leg during a match can quickly raise questions about fitness, especially when the player is then substituted. Supporters who have followed the side through a demanding schedule often look for any sign that a regular starter might need rest before the next fixture. Those concerns can ease when the player himself later confirms he is feeling fine.
The England international started in the centre of midfield during the latest home win and was replaced with around ten minutes remaining. Video recorded by a fan showed him crouched on the pitch and touching his hamstring before he walked away, prompting fresh discussion about his condition. He has previously managed lower-back and hamstring discomfort, including during the World Cup and the recent international break.
Arsenal beat Everton 2-0 at the Emirates, with goals from Ezri Konsa and Gabriel Magalhaes. Declan Rice was withdrawn in the 80th minute, with Martin Zubimendi coming on in his place. New footage emerged showing the midfielder grasping his hamstring after remaining crouched on the turf for an extended spell, according to Express. Following contact with the rear of his leg, he subsequently appeared to be hobbling as he relocated.
Rice has been troubled by lower back and hamstring issues since last Christmas. During the World Cup, the former West Ham prospect discussed openly the nerve discomfort he experienced throughout last season and while in the United States. He pulled out of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the Nations League fixtures against Czechia, Croatia and Spain, a choice believed to be connected to workload management. Whether his withdrawal against Everton was purely precautionary for an existing complaint remains to be seen.
Rice later posted an Instagram story confirming he is fine. “great win yesterday in tough conditions! Feeling good! Onto the next gunners,” he wrote. The message offered reassurance after the images that had circulated following the match. Arsenal face Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, presenting an opportunity to rest Rice ahead of the Premier League clash with Liverpool.
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta had further injury concerns at the Emirates. Riccardo Calafiori also sustained a knock after being introduced during the second half. The Italian international saw out the match, though his problem meant Noni Madueke ended the game filling in at left-back. “Yeah I wasn’t that mad to change those two from their positions,” Arteta said during his press conference. “It was because he had a slight issue, we don’t know what it is, it seems to be something very small, but he was cautious about it.”
The Spaniard will be grateful that defender Gabriel Magalhaes swiftly recovered after seemingly sustaining a serious injury. The Brazilian battled through and delivered a crucial goal. “Well, he’s a clear example, when I’m talking about the mentality of the team, obviously the mentality of the team is the mentality of the individuals in the team,” Arteta said. “Gabi is a great example of that because we were all scared. Not because of the way he went down, but the reaction of the players that were next to him. Immediately, he says that he wants to continue, and then he scores a goal to help us win the game. That’s what we need from our players.”
Rice’s Instagram update has helped calm immediate concerns about his availability. The midfielder’s ability to cover ground and contribute in both boxes remains important to the side, and the Carabao Cup fixture offers a chance to manage his minutes carefully. Arsenal will continue to monitor all fitness issues as they prepare for the next Premier League test at Anfield.
