Marc Guehi Receives Message of Support From Enzo Maresca After Aston Villa Mistake

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has issued a message of support for his vice-captain Marc Guehi after yet another defensive error leading to a goal from the England international at Villa Park on Saturday.

Marc Guehi: Where would Man City be without him...?

Guehi has endured a rough few weeks for both club and country, having given away a series of crucial goals in Manchester City and England colours in what has otherwise been a very positive start to the 2026/27 season for the centre-half.

Since joining City from Crystal Palace for £20 million in January whilst Pep Guardiola was managing the former, Marc Guehi has established himself as one of the first names on the Blues' teamsheet amid a period of transition at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester City underwent a comprehensive remake of their senior ranks last summer and again this time round as director of football Hugo Viana added ammunition to a squad that has failed to win the Premier League title since 2024.

Since being found guilty of breaching the Premier League's financial rules between 2009 and 2018 by an independent panel on September 29 - a decision Manchester City have filed an appeal against - the Blues have played with a cloud of uncertainty hanging over the Etihad Stadium amid greater doubt than ever over their 2027/28 top-flight future.

However, amid all the chaos behind the scenes and at boardroom level, Enzo Maresca and his players have remained focussed on the football, and after returning to winning ways against Ipswich Town last week following a 2-4 home loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League, City suffered a second win in three games at the weekend.

Maresca: I'm not worried about Marc at all!

Speaking to reporters in his post-match press conference at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon, Maresca was first quizzed on the decision to withdraw Marc Guehi at the half-time interval - with Manchester City trailing 1-0 due to the Englishman's error.

"Just a technical decision, like it's happened in all the games where a manager decides to make change," Maresca said.

But is the Italian coach not concerned by the form of his vice-captain? That feeling comes after Guehi also made an error leading to a goal conceded against Ipswich Town during the eventual 3-2 victory against the Premier League newcomers at the Etihad Stadium.

"I'm not worried about Marc at all," Maresca added. "I know he's playing every minute since the season started with us and the international team. It's not easy.

"But the change [at half-time] was also because he was on a yellow card and the way we wanted to be aggressive, sometimes to have one yellow card can be dangerous. But I'm not worried at all."

Will Marc Guehi start for Man City against Brighton and Hove Albion in midweek?

It is almost certain that Enzo Maresca will ring the changes in midweek as Manchester City look to return to winning ways after a run of two defeats in three games.

City take on Brighton and Hove Albion twice in four days next week: first on Wednesday night in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, and then again in the Premier League at the weekend - both games at home.

Marc Guehi could give way to the likes of Vitor Reis or Abdukodir Khusanov at centre-half should Enzo Maresca want to give the England international a night off on Wednesday to rest and recuperate ahead of Saturday afternoon's top-flight clash.
