There has been no official confirmation yet, with Maddison set for further medical tests, but De Zerbi is hopeful it is nothing serious.

He said: “I think it is not a very important problem. We need to do the medical check tomorrow, after tomorrow, I do not know. I hope it is not a big problem because he is a special player for us. We need him.”

Martin Keown praises Tottenham’s James Maddison after Chelsea win

Maddison’s impact, though limited this season, has now earned recognition from former England defender Martin Keown on BBC Final Score.

The former centre-back described Spurs’ victory over Chelsea as a statement win, before singling out Mathys Tel, Mohammed Kudus and Maddison for praise.

He said: “Tottenham have made a big statement in a really convincing performance. Whether it was the win on Monday night that sparked something, or just what this fixture means to the players – it has always been a bit feisty, shall we say? I think they stood up to it really well.

“I thought Maddison was magnificent in midfield. He is like the Artful Dodger, isn’t he? That midfield is full of mischief, but he is brave against the ball. He sets the tone, and he got them all playing really well.

“I thought Tel was magnificent out on the left-hand side, Kudus on the right was also really effective, and everybody really managed to handle the ball really well on the night. Spurs had almost 70% possession, which is remarkable for a team which was just a few places from the bottom of the table.

“I think what has changed for Spurs is the key personnel. De Zerbi said just a few weeks ago that this team lacks personality, lacks character. So, he put Maddison in, he took a gamble. Maybe he could have managed his minutes better because he is now injured. But he will be thinking, ‘Ok, that has paid off, it has got the momentum going’ – they have a vital win. He has to take gambles and it has paid off – as long as Maddison is not out for too long, because he is really important to what they do.”

Mathys Tel and Mohammed Kudus step up despite Maddison injury

Hopefully Maddison is sidelined for only a few weeks, but De Zerbi will be pleased to have seen other players step up. Conor Gallagher, who replaced Maddison, looked sharp in the second half, while Mathys Tel and Mohammed Kudus also rose to the occasion.

De Zerbi was full of praise for his wingers, claiming they were the decisive factor in Spurs’ victory over Chelsea. He said: “JP van Hecke played very well. Mateus Fernandes, I said. Tonali, very well, the best game in his time in Tottenham. Marmoush, he played a good game, it was a tough game for him. But he played, he fight in the right way.

“But Mathys Tel played very well. I think we won the game with two wingers, Kudus and Mathys, they made the difference. Also Micky van de Ven, because he was unbelievable with the ball. I think, in my time, Micky van de Ven played the best game.”

Mathys Tel was handed an 8/10 rating by FotMob after scoring the winner, while Kudus received 7.6/10 and Van de Ven earned a 7/10.
