“Odegaard was outstanding”but Merson was less complimentary about Gyökeres

Paul Merson has delivered contrasting verdicts on two Arsenal players following Saturday’s comfortable 2-0 victory over Everton, singling out Martin Ødegaard for praise while questioning Viktor Gyökeres’ performance.

The former Arsenal midfielder believes Ødegaard was the standout player at the Emirates, but he wasn’t nearly as impressed by the Swedish striker.

And it’s an interesting contrast, particularly given that Gyökeres contributed to Arsenal’s opening goal.

Merson Impressed by Ødegaard’s Confidence

Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson said:

“I thought Odegaard was outstanding.”

He continued:

“He just ticks it all over, he is so comfortable, he has got a nice left foot, he is just a nice, nice player.”

Merson also praised the Norwegian’s confidence, suggesting he has been one of Arsenal’s most impressive performers this season.

It’s difficult to argue that Ødegaard didn’t have a positive afternoon. His movement, passing and link-up play were excellent, something reflected in our Arsenal player ratings against Everton, where he received an 8/10.

The captain looks increasingly comfortable directing Arsenal’s attacking play, and his influence could become particularly important with some challenging fixtures approaching.

Is Merson Being Too Harsh on Gyökeres?

Merson was less complimentary about Gyökeres, suggesting the striker made life too easy for Everton defender James Tarkowski.

“He was playing against Tarkowski, who wants that kind of player,” Merson explained.

His argument was that Tarkowski would find a more mobile forward, drifting into different positions, considerably harder to handle.

There is some merit in that observation. Gyökeres didn’t register a shot during his 68 minutes on the pitch, and naturally Arsenal supporters want to see their centre-forward threatening the opposition goal.

But is that the whole story?

As we discussed earlier today, Gyökeres has now provided assists in consecutive appearances, including the contribution to Ezri Konsa’s opener against Everton.

He also worked hard against a physical Everton defence and helped bring teammates into attacking positions.

Of course, nobody is suggesting that assists alone will satisfy expectations of Arsenal’s striker indefinitely. Goals matter, and Gyökeres knows that better than anyone.

However, perhaps there’s room to appreciate what he’s contributing while acknowledging that his finishing still needs to improve.

Do you agree with Merson’s contrasting assessments of Ødegaard and Gyökeres, or is the Arsenal striker being judged too harshly?
