Final score: Chiefs fall to Seahawks for first loss of season

The Kansas City Chiefs suffered their first loss of the season Sunday night, falling 20-3 to the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field. Kansas City dropped to 5-1 after being held to 210 total yards, 11 first downs and a 3-for-10 conversion rate on third down. Seattle accumulated 388 yards, converted 11 of 15 third downs and controlled possession for more than 32 minutes.

Seattle led 10-0 at halftime behind Jason Myers’ 25-yard field goal and Sam Darnold’s 28-yard touchdown pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Patrick Mahomes threw an interception to Ty Okada, but Nohl Williams prevented further damage by intercepting Darnold near the goal line and returning it 64 yards. Kansas City failed to capitalize when Harrison Butker’s 58-yard attempt came up short.

Butker’s 50-yard field goal produced the Chiefs’ only points in the third quarter. He later missed from 45 yards, and Emanuel Wilson’s 21-yard touchdown run extended Seattle’s advantage to 20-3. The Seahawks limited Kansas City to 50 rushing yards, including a quiet homecoming for former Seattle running back Kenneth Walker III, and then sealed the game by running out the clock. Kansas City will return home looking to rebound from its lowest-scoring performance of the season.

Kansas City crossed midfield on its opening possession behind an 18-yard completion from Patrick Mahomes to Cyrus Allen. The Chiefs appeared to convert third-and-7 with a 12-yard pass to Kenneth Walker III, but an illegal-shift penalty on Travis Kelce erased the gain. Facing third-and-12 after the penalty, Mahomes threw incomplete down the left side to Kelce, bringing on the punt team. Matt Araiza then punted 36 yards, with Rashid Shaheed making the fair catch at Seattle’s 15-yard line.

Seattle leaned heavily on its running game, using five different ball carriers to move from its own 15 to the 42. Jaxon Smith-Njigba gained five yards on an end-around and later converted third-and-5 with a nine-yard reception, while tight end AJ Barner moved the chains with a direct snap on third-and-1. Kansas City’s defense eventually forced a third-down incompletion from Sam Darnold, and Michael Dickson’s 48-yard punt was fair-caught by Nikko Remigio at the Chiefs’ 10.

Kansas City put together a balanced drive from its own 10, with Kenneth Walker III carrying four times and Patrick Mahomes completing passes to Justin Watson and Noah Gray. Gray made the biggest play, hauling in a 19-yard reception to move the Chiefs across midfield. The drive stalled at Seattle’s 42 after Xavier Worthy gained only two yards on second down and Mahomes’ third-down pass to Worthy fell incomplete under pressure from Derick Hall. Matt Araiza’s punt was fair-caught by Rashid Shaheed at the Seahawks’ 7.

Seattle marched 93 yards from its own 7, converting three third downs along the way. Sam Darnold found Cooper Kupp for 11 yards before connecting with Jaxon Smith-Njigba for gains of 10 and 33 yards, the latter moving the Seahawks to Kansas City’s 20. Seattle reached the 6-yard line, but the Chiefs’ defense tightened: Alohi Gilman and Nick Bolton dropped AJ Barner for a one-yard loss before George Karlaftis pressured Darnold into a third-down incompletion. Jason Myers made the 25-yard field goal to give Seattle a 3-0 lead

Kansas City opened the possession with a five-yard pass from Patrick Mahomes to Kenneth Walker III, followed by a four-yard Walker run. After Mahomes’ third-down pass to Walker fell incomplete, the Chiefs kept the offense on the field, and Walker converted fourth-and-1 with a three-yard run to the Seattle 46. Mahomes then missed Travis Kelce under pressure from Leonard Williams before Nick Emmanwori pressured him into an interception intended for Jalen Royals. Ty Okada returned the pick one yard to Seattle’s 33, ending Kansas City’s most promising possession.

Seattle turned Patrick Mahomes’ interception into a 10-play, 66-yard touchdown drive. Jaxon Smith-Njigba gained eight yards on an end-around, Emanuel Wilson converted second-and-13 with a 15-yard reception and Sam Darnold scrambled seven yards to move the chains on third-and-6. On third-and-9 from the Kansas City 28, Darnold found Smith-Njigba deep down the left side, where he was initially ruled out at the 1-yard line. Replay showed Smith-Njigba reached the end zone before stepping out, changing the play to a 28-yard touchdown and giving Seattle a 10-0 lead.

Kansas City’s offense went three-and-out after taking over at its own 35 with 1:44 remaining. Patrick Mahomes threw consecutive incompletions to Jalen Royals and Travis Kelce before a five-yard completion to Emmett Johnson left the Chiefs short of the marker. Matt Araiza’s 56-yard punt reached the Seattle 4, but Rashid Shaheed returned it 32 yards to the 36, giving the Seahawks favorable field position.

Sam Darnold quickly moved the Seahawks into scoring range. He connected with Jaxon Smith-Njigba for gains of 21 and 28 yards, placing the ball at Kansas City’s 2-yard line. After Mansoor Delane and Drue Tranquill dropped George Holani for a one-yard loss, George Karlaftis pressured Darnold into an end-zone interception intended for Smith-Njigba. Nohl Williams returned the pick 64 yards to Seattle’s 44, preventing the Seahawks from extending their 10-0 lead before halftime.

Following Nohl Williams’ 64-yard interception return, Kansas City had only seven seconds to capitalize before halftime. Kenneth Walker III gained four yards to the Seattle 40, but Harrison Butker’s 58-yard field-goal attempt came up short as time expired. The Chiefs entered halftime trailing 10-0 despite Williams’ late takeaway.

Seattle opened the second half with a 14-play, 57-yard drive that drained nearly seven minutes from the clock. Sam Darnold converted third downs with a 10-yard scramble and a 12-yard pass to George Holani before finding AJ Barner for 19 yards to reach the Kansas City 12. The Seahawks advanced to the 6, but Nick Bolton and Mansoor Delane dropped Velus Jones Jr. for a six-yard loss, and a delay-of-game penalty pushed Seattle back even farther. Jason Myers finished the possession with a 35-yard field goal, extending the Seahawks’ lead to 13-0.

Kansas City answered with a 13-play drive that consumed more than six minutes. Xavier Worthy converted fourth-and-1 with a two-yard catch, and Patrick Mahomes later found Travis Kelce for 18 yards on third-and-7 to move the Chiefs to Seattle’s 33. A 15-yard reception by Kenneth Walker III was erased by offsetting penalties, and Derick Hall then sacked Mahomes and forced a fumble that Mahomes recovered at the 32. Harrison Butker converted the ensuing 50-yard field goal, cutting Seattle’s lead to 13-3.

Seattle picked up eight yards on its first two plays, but a false-start penalty on center Jalen Sundell turned third-and-2 into third-and-7. Sam Darnold then completed a short pass to Jaxon Smith-Njigba for only two yards, forcing a punt that Nikko Remigio fair-caught at the Kansas City 13.

Kansas City drove from its own 13 to the Seattle 27 behind a pair of 19-yard completions from Patrick Mahomes to Travis Kelce and Noah Gray. An offensive-holding penalty created second-and-20, but Emmett Johnson gained 12 yards on a reception before Mahomes scrambled nine yards to convert third-and-8. The drive stalled after Andrew Armstrong gained three yards and Mahomes’ third-down pass to Cyrus Allen fell incomplete. Harrison Butker then pushed the 45-yard field-goal attempt wide right, leaving Seattle’s lead at 13-3 with 8:37 remaining.

Seattle responded to Harrison Butker’s missed field goal with a nine-play, 65-yard touchdown drive that drained nearly five minutes from the clock. Jaxon Smith-Njigba opened the possession with a 14-yard reception, and AJ Barner converted third-and-1 on a direct snap before adding a 10-yard catch. Emanuel Wilson carried six times for 40 yards on the drive, finishing it by breaking free for a 21-yard touchdown on third-and-4. Jason Myers’ extra point extended Seattle’s lead to 20-3 with 3:52 remaining.

Kansas City’s attempt to answer Seattle’s touchdown lasted only four plays. Patrick Mahomes threw three consecutive incompletions before connecting with Travis Kelce for just three yards on fourth-and-10. Seattle took over at the Chiefs’ 45 with 3:19 remaining.

Seattle kept the ball on the ground after taking over at the Kansas City 45, handing it to Emanuel Wilson five consecutive times for 21 yards. Facing fourth-and-1 at the Chiefs’ 24, AJ Barner took another direct snap and powered ahead for the conversion, allowing the Seahawks to drain the remaining clock. Seattle also announced that left tackle Charles Cross was out for the remainder of the game.
