Seahawks defense holds Patrick Mahomes to the worst offensive performance of his career

The Seattle Seahawks completely shut the Kansas City Chiefs offense down in a glorious 20-3 win at Lumen Field. While the offense limiting the turnovers, converting timely third downs, and holding up in pass protection were keys to a pivotal victory, the Seahawks’ Super Bowl-winning ‘Dark Side’ defense deserves the main headlines.

If not for Patrick Mahomes recovering his own fumble in one of the wildest scrambles you’ll ever see, the Chiefs might have been shut out for the first time in any Mahomes start. It was only the fourth time a Mahomes-led offense failed to reach the end zone, and it was a night of firsts in terms of offensive ineptitude for the three-time Super Bowl champion.

Kansas City never reached the red zone, which was a first for the Mahomes era in the regular season or playoffs. But wait, there’s more fun with numbers!

Technically, the Chiefs did have just 212 yards of offense in a playoff win over the Houston Texans, but when 18 yards were lost on an intentional safety I think we can call the Seahawks performance the official lowest yardage total in a Mahomes start.

Yes, Kenneth Walker was a big storyline coming into Sunday night. He had just 36 yards on 14 carries, but he also just got there and the Seahawks have the stingiest run defense in the NFL. Patrick Mahomes has almost a decade worth of gaudy offensive numbers, such that it’s jarring to see him look so frazzled and bereft of answers. This is not unlike the Super Bowl losses to the Philadelphia Eagles and Tampa Bay Buccaneers for Mahomes, but his first time playing ‘The Dark Side’ ended in a night he’ll want to quickly forget.

Mike Macdonald’s defenses tends to do that.

If you’re keeping score, the only other time Mike Macdonald coached against Mahomes was the AFC Championship when the Chiefs beat the Baltimore Ravens. KC only scored a field goal in the second half, which means Macdonald defenses haven’t allowed a TD against Mahomes in six consecutive quarters.
