New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo has criticized the NFL after receiving a controversial helmet penalty during Sunday’s 27-21 overtime victory against the Houston Texans. The rookie believes the league celebrates his physical running style while penalizing him for displaying it on the field.

The incident occurred during the first quarter when Skattebo powered through the defense for a seven-yard gain. He lowered his helmet while colliding with Texans safety M.J. Stewart, prompting officials to call a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty.

The flag wiped out the gain and immediately sparked frustration on the Giants’ sideline. Head coach John Harbaugh also challenged the decision, arguing that running backs have limited time to adjust when meeting defenders.

Skattebo addressed the controversial call after the game, expressing frustration with what he views as inconsistent treatment from the league.

“The NFL loves to post me when I do stuff like that but then also wants to take stuff from me,” Skattebo said. “I’m going to run the ball like I want to run the ball.”

He then delivered a pointed message about the possibility of future penalties and fines.

“If I’m going to continue to get flags for it or fined for it, guess I’m going to play for free,” Skattebo added.

Despite the early setback, Skattebo played a major role in New York’s victory. He finished with 124 rushing yards on 17 carries and scored a fourth-quarter touchdown.

His biggest contribution came in overtime, when he broke free for a 42-yard run. The explosive play helped set up Devin Singletary’s 30-yard touchdown, securing the Giants’ win.

The victory improved New York’s record to 4-2-1, giving the team momentum heading into its bye week.

However, the penalty remains a talking point because of its rarity against offensive ball carriers. NFL rules prohibit players from initiating contact with the crown of their helmets, regardless of their position.

Skattebo was previously fined $7,073 for impermissible helmet contact during Week 3.

His latest comments highlight the tension between the league’s player-safety rules and the physical style that makes certain running backs stand out. While Skattebo remains committed to aggressive running, the Giants will need him to balance that approach with the NFL’s restrictions.
