Former Liverpool player Jermaine Pennant has said he was attacked by a dog as he shared the news of his injury. Pennant, now 43, hung up his boots in 2017 after a career of ups and downs.

The winger became Britain's most expensive teenager when Arsenal signed him from Notts County for £2 million at the age of 15. His turbulent journey through football even saw him reach the Champions League final with Liverpool, where he took on AC Milan at the Olympic Stadium in Athens in 2007.

He departed Arsenal after six years at the club and just 12 appearances before moving to Birmingham City and then onto the Reds where he spent three years. Several moves across the globe followed his departure from Merseyside, playing for Real Zaragoza and Pune City along the way.

Now, Pennant has shared the news of a recent dog attack as he stepped into save his own dog, King.

Writing on Instagram, he said: "So I was attacked by a German shepherd, I tried to protect King but the dog got my leg, I was on the floor with the dog still attached with no sign of letting go, until King intervened as he didn’t know what was going on.

"But the minute he did he fought the dog off and saved what could've been an horrendous situation for me.

"King was unhurt with a little nip on his leg, but had blood covered all over him which wasn’t mine. At this point I forgot the agony I was in, and my heart sank, but it wasn’t King's."

Pennant did not say when or where the attack happened, with the talkSPORT pundit also thanking his dog King and his friend in the aftermath of the incident

Last year, the ECHO reported on Pennant's former Cheshire home which stood empty for several years.

The large detached house in Hale was bought by the then-Liverpool winger in 2006 for just over £1 million but was left empty from 2020 after he split with his partner Alice Goodwin.

It was then reportedly taken over by a drug gang and turned into a cannabis farm before it was hit by two fires in the same month.

The mansion has since been bought and transformed by Steve Leonard who is originally from Anfield.

He previously told the ECHO: "I remember sitting on the garden wall after the sale went through. There was muck everywhere, there was ash. You name it, all around us, it was there. And me and Tina looked at each other and said, 'we've done it'."
