Former Liverpool footballer Jermaine Pennant has revealed he was attacked by a dog while sharing details of his injuries. Pennant, now 43, retired from professional football in 2017 following a varied career.

‌

‌

The winger, who has been vocal of the Reds this season, became Britain's most expensive teenager when Arsenal acquired him from Notts County aged just 15. His eventful football journey included reaching the Champions League final with Liverpool, facing AC Milan at the Olympic Stadium in Athens in 2007.

‌

He left Arsenal after six years at the club, having made only 12 appearances, before transferring to Birmingham City and subsequently joining the Reds for a three-year spell. Multiple moves around the world followed his exit from Merseyside, with stints at Real Zaragoza and Pune City amongst others.

Pennant has now disclosed details of a recent dog attack which occurred as he attempted to protect his own dog, King.

Posting on Instagram, he said: "So I was attacked by a German shepherd, I tried to protect King but the dog got my leg, I was on the floor with the dog still attached with no sign of letting go, until King intervened as he didn't know what was going on.

"But the minute he did he fought the dog off and saved what could've been an horrendous situation for me.

‌

"King was unhurt with a little nip on his leg, but had blood covered all over him which wasn't mine. At this point I forgot the agony I was in, and my heart sank, but it wasn't King's."

Pennant gave no details regarding the time or location of the assault, though the talkSPORT pundit took the opportunity to express his gratitude towards his dog King and a close friend in the wake of the incident.

Last year, the Liverpool ECHO reported on Pennant's former Cheshire property, which had sat unoccupied for a number of years.

‌

The substantial detached house in Hale was purchased by the then-Liverpool winger in 2006 for just over £1 million, but had lain empty since 2020 following his separation from partner Alice Goodwin.

The property was subsequently reported to have been seized by a drugs gang and converted into a cannabis farm, before being struck by two separate fires within the same month.

The mansion has since been acquired and completely renovated by Steve Leonard, a man with roots in Anfield.

He previously told the ECHO: "I remember sitting on the garden wall after the sale went through. There was muck everywhere, there was ash. You name it, all around us, it was there. And me and Tina looked at each other and said, 'we've done it'."
