Andoni Iraola secured his first Premier League win at Anfield as Liverpool head coach after the Reds beat Brighton 2-0 on Sunday.

The result ended a wait that began on August 29, when Iraola’s first home league game finished 2-2 against Nottingham Forest. It was Liverpool’s first Premier League home win since April.

Pascal Gross put Florian Wirtz’s shot into his own net in the 17th minute. Alexander Isak doubled the lead four minutes later, finishing Bradley Barcola’s cut-back.

Brighton had 64% of the possession and 17 shots, but only one hit the target. Liverpool kept their fourth league clean sheet of the season and moved up to fourth in the table.

Attention now turns to the transfer market, where Tijuana midfielder Gilberto Mora is a reported Liverpool target.

According to Unanimo, via Sport Witness, former Mexico defender Claudio Suarez says Arsenal and Bayern Munich have also approached the 18-year-old.

“I know for a fact that he’s had offers,” Suarez said. “Arsenal showed interest, and so did Bayern Munich.”

He said Arsenal planned to sign Mora and then loan him out, because he might not have started for them straight away.

“I happen to know that both Arsenal and Bayern presented him with a great project,” Suarez added.

Liverpool’s interest has been reported for several weeks.

TUDN journalist David Faitelson said earlier this month that Mora’s representative, Rafaela Pimenta, had presented Tijuana with a Liverpool offer worth more than $50 million, but she declined to comment.

Mora turned 18 on October 14, which allows him to move to a club abroad. His contract with Tijuana runs until 2029, and his agent has said no agreement exists with Liverpool or any other European club.

Suarez believes the teenager should leave Mexico soon. “If it were up to me, I’d let him go,” he said.

He called Mora’s situation “unique, the kind that comes along once in a very long while”.

“He’s extraordinary, both because of his age and the entire development path he’s been on since Juan Carlos Osorio gave him his debut,” Suarez said.

He argued that a spell in Europe would speed up Mora’s development.

“It’s just a matter of finding the right club, somewhere he can adapt quickly and where he’ll be well supported,” he said.

Suarez also pointed to the differences in training.

“The training methodologies are different from what’s used in Mexico,” he said. “I think things are a bit more relaxed in Mexico.”

Living abroad brings its own challenge, he added. “It’s not easy being on your own, even if your family is with you.”

Suarez is not worried about the risk. “It wouldn’t be the end of the world if things didn’t go well, though I personally believe he’ll do very well,” he said.
