It’s back-to-back defeats in the Premier League for Everton and David Moyes – and the manager just gave a post-match answer that will surely not go down well with some supporters.

Goals from Ezri Konsa and Gabriel gave Arsenal a 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium to keep their excellent record going against Everton there.

Moyes was critical of referee Tony Harrington after the game, but realistically it was another poor performance from Everton.

Although Arsenal are obviously a great side, the showing just lacked quality and creativity, and there was again some wastefulness on the part of Thierno Barry.

After the game, David Moyes was asked about the last two results and specifically, what they have shown him – and the answer is certainly to prompt a reaction.

How does David Moyes' response to back-to-back defeats to Chelsea and Arsenal make you feel? 🤔 The Everton boss doesn't seem overly upset despite the losses…

100%. Think he probably will do since Moyes has started him the last two rounds. Huge cause for concern if he doesn’t

Will be interesting to see what he does against Newcastle. I honestly just can’t see him starting one of the kids. I’d go Alcaraz I think, scored in last round and I’m not sure there’d be much of a drop-off, if any

Hear me out, if the Rashy deal doesnt go through, we should aim to target a 23 and under player with 50+ games ubder their belt, and I think if the Garnacho loan falls through, we should try and pick him up for a cheapish price, hes direct, can cut in and score and hes super technichle, i think thats what we need, and it would be healthy comp for George.

David Moyes gives pathetic response after Arsenal and Chelsea defeats

Speaking on Sky Sports, Moyes said: “We’ve not been rolled over in either game. We’re lacking a bit, as we know. But I do think, in the main, we’ve tried to give both games a good effort. I think we did, even today. We didn’t do as well as we would’ve liked, but we still gave it a good enough effort.”

It was the kind of answer that is going to wind up a lot of Everton fans who feel that the club is lacking ambition.

Many fans get annoyed when Everton are told to be grateful to merely exist in the Premier League, and sometimes there is a narrative that the Toffees can’t take points off some of these leading clubs that are competing for silverware.

‘Gave it a good enough effort’ is a bizarre thing to say after a 2-0 loss. It just shows that Moyes is actually fairly content to have lost the game. He even explicitly mentions not being rolled over by Arsenal.

It’s a mentality that does not lend itself to getting wins against these top teams, which should always be the objective.

Of course, Everton probably don’t match up to Arsenal in terms of quality. But does that mean that they shouldn’t even try to win the game?

Moyes always tends to talk with this kind of tone and it is getting beyond tiring. Yes, he has done a great job to stabilise the football club. But Everton fans want more and they are absolutely entitled to take that stance, given how big this club is and how long it’s been since Everton won a trophy.
