Through three games as a Patriot, A.J. Brown has as many catches and yards as he used to on a single Sunday.
Brown is up to nine receptions for 101 yards on the season, a campaign interrupted by the high ankle sprain he suffered Week 1 at Seattle. Since returning on Oct. 18, Brown has dealt with some inconsistencies, from drops to blocking effort in games versus the Jets and Bears. He’s also caught fewer than half the 20 targets he’s seen from Drake Maye, who completed more passes to Brown than any other receiver during training camp.
Patriots coach Mike Vrabel said during a Monday morning interview on WEEI he is not concerned about Brown’s ability to return to peak performance following the injury. Vrabel also assessed Brown’s play since he returned.
“Well, I thought that he dropped a few passes, and then the other night (at Chicago) there was a contested catch that I thought — I’ve seen him make those plays in the past, I’ve seen those plays get called for (defensive pass interference), and I’ve seen those plays be good plays by the defense down the field,” Vrabel said. “So I don’t think anybody has to press here or anything else. I think we just have to get back into a rhythm offensively with the guys that we have, and continue to play.
Vrabel continued: “We could play better defensively, and then our special teams took a took a seat, a step back here after we had a really good performance. Then we weren’t good enough in all three phases.”
The Patriots will return to action with a 4:25 kickoff at Miami on Sunday, Nov. 1.
The Dolphins won their first game of the season over the weekend, beating the Jets 28-25. The Patriots, who swept their season series with Miami last year, are slated as 7.5-point favorites.
